Overview

In the summer of 1995, New York artist Elisha Cooper hit the road to capture America with his paint brush.

Fifteen thousand miles and 136 sketches later, his cross-country odyssey resulted in Off the Road--a visual diary that captures the spirit of places as majestic as Yellowstone and as quaint as Alice, North Dakota.

Beginning with the Manhattan skyline, he heads north through the heart of New England, loops back down through the deep south, breezes past the arid Southwest, hits the California coast, and swings back through the Plains states on his way home to New York City. It's a fifty-day whirlwind tour that includes stop-offs in Friendship, Maine; Intercourse, Pennsylvania; Moss Point, Mississippi; Enid, Oklahoma; Pilar, New Mexico; Hollywood Hills, California; Canby, Oregon; Moose Junction, Wyoming; Chicago, Illinois; and Muskegon, Michigan.

A lovely gift, with full-color art throughout, Off the Road is sure to delight readers with its whimsical yet perceptive look at America.

Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly
The cross-country road trip has become a cliche - on obligatory rite of passage to which even Beavis and Butthead must tediously submitt. Enter the sweet, meandering counter voice of 25 year-old Cooper in this, his second book of sketches and observations (his first depicted A Year in New York in similar form). Alone on his odyssey, he haults with pad and watercolors at traditional pitstops (Vegas, baby!) and why not places like Intercourse, PA., recording small bits of Americana: bingo in Moss point, Miss., a nudist spa in middleton Calif., and an awful lot of cows along the way. It's almost too precious, but Cooper has an unswerving eye and a happy knack for eavesdropping. A slight but smart take on th non -MTV real world. A- (Entertainment Weekly January 24, 1997)
USA Today
Almost everyone yearns to jump in a car and travel across the USA, actually seeing this gigantic country. Artist Elisha Cooper, 25, did exactly that. The charming result: Off the Road: An American Sketchbook. Using watercolors and simple ink drawings, Cooper chronicles his 50-day with wit and whimsy. (USA Today Best Bets January 31,1997)
