Off the Wall [Bonus Tracks]

Barnes & Noble
In 1979, Michael Jackson embarked on the next phase of his solo career and entered the studio with veteran jazz and pop producer Quincy Jones. Containing four Top Ten singles, Off the Wall became the most successful project of Jackson's career to that point. The album scored Jackson a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, though it merely hinted at the superstardom that would follow with the release of his next solo project, Thriller. This reissue contains bonus material, including original demo recordings of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Workin' Day and Night." Plus, interviews with Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton.

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Michael Jackson had recorded solo prior to the release of Off the Wall in 1979, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break disco wide open into a new world where the beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus -- it was part of a colorful tapestry of lush ballads and strings, smooth soul and pop, soft rock and alluring funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid-'70s hit "Dancing Machine," but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This is certainly due to Jackson's emergence as a blindingly gifted vocalist, equally skilled with overwrought ballads as "She's Out of My Life" as driving dancefloor shakers as "Working Day and Night" and "Get on the Floor," where his asides are as gripping as his delivery on the verses. It's also due to the brilliant songwriting, an intoxicating blend of strong melodies, rhythmic hooks, and indelible construction. Most of all, its success is due to the sound constructed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, a dazzling array of disco beats, funk guitars, clean mainstream pop, and unashamed (and therefore affecting) schmaltz that is utterly thrilling in its utter joy. This is highly professional, highly crafted music, and its details are evident, but the overall effect is nothing but pure pleasure. Jackson and Jones expanded this approach on the blockbuster Thriller, often with equally stunning results, but they never bettered it. [The 2001 reissue adds demo versions of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Workin' Day and Night," interviews with producer Quincy Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton, and a new booklet]

    Incredibly Wonderful!!!!!

This album was released twenty eight years ago. and when you play it today it does not sound dated. Every song on it is timeless and "Off The Wall" the title track just has that great groove you can listen to over and over again. The special edition of this cd gives you a taste of what a musical genius Michael is.

    A Must Have

This is a really good album to add to anyones MJ collection. I usually don't like disco that much, but these songs have a really good dance beat!! But the reason that I gave it 4 stars is because on some tracks such as I Can't Help It,well, I think MJ could do better. But otherwise, it is AWESOME!!!

Great for the collection, but not as good as Bad or Thriller

    Old School Michael

I hadn't listened to these songs since I was a teen. This is a true testament to what an artist and a performer is supposed to be. These songs sound just as good as what I remembered and they make to feel JOY!!

    MASTERPIECE OF RECORD MAKING

I have always liked this record, but after the recent death of Michael I have a newfound appreciation of its greatness. It is, in fact, not only one of the greatest Disco albums of all time...it is one of the greatest recordings ever. With the help of Quincy Jones, Michael charted his own course for Mega Superstardom with this album. The amazing production values and Michael's young voice crowding maturity make this album unforgetable and groundbreaking.

    Awesome!

I had to buy this after hearing Off The Wall on the radio one day. Great song. There I was going down the interstate and I could not stop moving/"dancing" in my seat. Awesome song. There are other great songs. One of Michael's best albums.
