Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - M.H.B. Hughes
The sixth book in DC Comics’ “Cosmic Adventures in the Eighth Grade” series of Supergirl graphic novels has improved on its predecessor. A beginning cast of characters and pictures explains each one, although having Supergirl, Supragirl, and Superiorgirl in the same book is still a stretch in comprehension, not to mention personality differentiation. The presence of Superman and his archenemy Lex Luthor adds even more superpowers, with even the ill-tempered cat and horse flaunting their own super capes. The sister of classic Superman enemy Lex Luthor is bent on doing evil to Supergirl, but the youngsters do not always check their weapons ahead of time, resulting in rocket and death ray malfunctions both good and bad, as even Supergirl has a rocket-attack error. Since this tale takes place in eighth grade, the true evildoer turns out to be the school principal. His multidimensional destruction plots are incredibly complex. In the end Superman’s nemesis becomes the victim of human emotion, stopping his evil deed to rescue his sister. Lex Luthor submits to incarceration (Although, really, what is jail to a supervillain?), while his sister’s injuries shock her into abandoning evil intent. The authors added a glossary and a tongue-in-cheek study guide, a marked improvement over previous installments in the series. Reviewer: M.H.B. Hughes; Ages 6 to 10.
