Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This multiauthored textbook of geriatric medicine is written for primary care geriatricians and those treating older persons, emphasizing the approach to problems encountered in the doctor's office.
Purpose: The purpose is to enhance the "perceptive knowledge" of physicians treating older persons; that is, to help physicians recognize the differentiating points, those that might be hidden to the untrained eye. The authors meet these worthy goals handsomely.
Audience: Physicians practicing in their offices are the primary audience. Students and trainees who will care for older persons will also find this book extremely attractive. Many of the authors are leading geriatricians, and write from a perspective of great experience.
Features: The first and second sections of the book — management principles in caring for older persons and functional consequences of common syndromes — are especially strong. Such nuanced thoughtful discussion of how to take a history and what information is obtained by observing the older person is missing from both the extensive textbooks of geriatric medicine and the pocket-sized manuals of geriatrics. The same goes for the discussion of caregivers, grief, and weight loss. Each chapter begins with a set of clinical pearls — all worth reading and digesting — and ends with a carefully annotated set of references. At many spots in the book, the recommendations are given an evidence-based grade.
Assessment: This is a really good book. Its format of a larger page size makes for excellent layout, easy, comfortable reading, and provides the canvas for the excellent illustrations and plates that adorn its pages. This book has unique content, packaged in an attractive form. It deserves a wide readership.
