Overview

Malaria is nothing a good dose of quinine can’t handle.

At least that’s what software training specialist Frannie Freeman thinks when her vile office manager Malia — aka Malaria — unexpectedly marries their boss Sam, with whom Frannie has been in love for years. Certain it’s only a matter of time before Sam comes to his senses, she hides her heartbreak behind sarcastic humor and copious amounts of tequila.

Exceptional at everything except romantic relationships, Frannie is still waiting two years later. When Sam suddenly confides that he believes he was roofied the night of his surprise Las Vegas wedding, it seems too good to be true. And it isn’t long before she realizes that’s exactly what it is.

A quick little divorce seems the ticket, but Malia’s father has other things in mind. Garland Harper is determined to stop his daughter’s downward spiral, and he isn’t afraid to use whatever means comes to hand — such as Sam’s “saving people” complex. And if that doesn’t work — as the CEO of the company for which they work, Harper has sufficient means to make good on his threat that if Sam reneges on his agreement to stay with Malia until she’s dry, the only bars Frannie will see for many years won’t be offering tequila.

Now, faced with letting Sam go forever or fighting for her heart’s desire, Frannie prepares for battle with a woman’s three best weapons — a loyal heart, a willingness to fight dirty, and the strongest margarita money can buy.

Meet the Author

Sharon Gerlach was in training to be a ninja, but a dismaying lack of physical grace and balance—not to mention the inability to keep her big mouth shut—ended her ninja career before it had really begun. Now she writes. She doesn’t write about ninjas because that’s obviously a sore subject. But she writes about other really cool things and figures someone else will cover the ninjas. Life’s really not all about ninjas, anyway. Sharon lives on the dry side of the Pacific Northwest with her husband (who must really be fond of her as he hasn’t left her yet despite her ninja failings); two of her three kids (none of whom possess ninja qualities either); and a Border collie who suffers the presence of seven cats. Yes, you guessed it—ninja cats!Subscribe at RunningInkPress.com to be notified of more releases by this author.

    Witty, warm & wonderful!

This book was a warm, cozy read, like visiting with a zany friend who's telling you a fabulous story. (I will also mention here that I'm male; guys, don't be deterred by the fact that this is a romance.)

Frannie Freeman is witty and drawn so real you expect her to leap off the pages and whip you up a batch of strong margaritas (or at least you pray she will). Sam is a flawed man, and to portray him as anything but imperfect would have been an incompetent mistake which this author, thankfully, does not make.

The author handled what could have been a very sleazy situation - Frannie & Sam's affair while Sam is still married, regardless of how his marriage came about or of its current state - with sensitivity and depth. Frannie herself is an engaging girl-next-door whose mishaps are legendary and most often caused by Frannie herself.

This is a character-driven novel portraying a relationship begun, broken, and reforged by the simple faithfulness of a woman's love. Gerlach delivers with wit, snark, and a boatload of skill.

    Loved it

This book was great. It was very funny in a way that most women will understand. The author says amusing things that we think but may not say. When it comes to affairs most stories have you side with the betrayed but this one has you rooting for the other woman. I will be reading more by this author.

    Not just another sleazy affair

First, I was a little deterred about the subject of this book, only because I figured Frannie would be any other sleazy "are you really that stupid" type of character. I got it because I LOVED The Secret Dreams of Sarah-Jane Quinn.

BTW she wasn’t. Sleazy that is. She had spunk, intelligence, wit, a zany personality, and is slightly awkward. She’s the girl next door that lost the man of her dreams, making her feel like she really isn’t good enough to have it all (specifically the man).

The margarita nights – what girl doesn’t have that one friend who gets a little extra crazy on tequila (or hard liquor). Frannie has several so it makes the Tony scenes hilarious.

Sam isn’t presented as perfect, and that makes him loveable instead of a dirt bag. He’s honorable, and somewhat of a pushover at times. The breakfast scene is like a hammer on a jawbreaker – splitting open everything he hides behind (honor) and makes him find the backbone he needs to leave a loveless marriage and grab onto life with both hands.

I thought it was handled very well. Frannie acknowledges that her weak spot is Sam, and isn’t afraid to admit it and isn’t apologetic about it – she loves it and doesn’t want to fix it, and very much has a take it or leave it attitude about it. Sam, bless his little heart, just needed a frying pan taken to his head a couple times to gets some sense knocked into him!

Overall, Gerlach is now on my list of must reads ALL of her books.

    Great read

Witty, engaging, funny charachters. It is "the other woman's" story like you have never seen it before. A delightful read by a talented author. Reminded me of another version of Bridget Jones'Diary. About 560 pages long.

    A bit boring

This book had some funny parts but overall it was slow and boring. Sometimes there was a disconnect between the characters and the scences jumped around a bit. I also questioned the author's references many times. I actually looked up the publishing date of this book because it read like a book from the 80's. I was shocked to learn that it was published in 2012! There is nothing modern in the author's style of writing. Sadly, I was not impressed and will pass on future books.
