They awaken, however, when police dog Gloria joins Buckle onstage. As Buckle speaks, Gloria-behind Buckle's back-mimes each safety lesson (e.g., leaping sky-high for ``Never leave a thumbtack where you might sit on it!'' and making her fur stand on end to illustrate ``Do not go swimming during electrical storms!''). School safety increases tenfold and Buckle and Gloria find themselves in great demand. But when he finally learns of his sidekick's secret sideshow, Buckle's feelings are terribly hurt. K-Gr 3-A fresh, funny story about the wonders of teamwork. Officer Buckle is a safety-conscious policeman who spends his time devising tips for avoiding accidents. Unfortunately, the children of Napville School are an ungrateful audience, snoring through his lectures and ignoring his advice. Enter Gloria, Napville's new police dog and Officer Buckle's new partner. She accompanies him when he gives his lecture and performs her duties with aplomb. Buckle is surprised to see the children so attentive, but each time he checks on Gloria, she is sitting at attention. Thanks to the humorous illustrations, readers know what Buckle does not-Gloria is performing to beat the band, acting out the various accidents behind his back. Things are swell until a news team videotapes Buckle and his amazing sidekick and he learns that the reason for his newfound popularity is really Gloria's comedy routine. This sends the officer into quite a slump. Her act is a complete flop without him, however, and Napville School has its biggest accident ever after her solo performance. In the end, Buckle realizes that they're only successful as a team, and he is jolted out of his self-pitying funk. The vibrant palette of the cartoon art, as well as the amusing story, make this title an appealing read-aloud choice. When rotund, good-natured Officer Buckle visits school assemblies to read off his sensible safety tips, the children listen, bored and polite, dozing off one by one. But when the new police dog, Gloria, stands behind him, secretly miming the dire consequences of acting imprudently, the children suddenly become attentive, laughing uproariously and applauding loudly. The good" policeman is first gratified with the response, then deflated to learn that Gloria was stealing the show. Finally, he realizes that he and Gloria make a great team, and they take their show on the road again, adding a new message, "ALWAYS STICK WITH YOUR BUDDY!" Like Officer Buckle and Gloria, the deadpan humor of the text and slapstick wit of the illustrations make a terrific combination. Large, expressive line drawings illustrate the characters with finesse, and the Kool-Aid-bright washes add energy and pizzazz. Children will enjoy the many safety-tip notes tacked up on the endpapers and around the borders of the jacket front. Somehow, the familiar advice (like "Never leave a bar of soap where someone might step on it" or "Never tilt your chair back on two legs" ) "is" more entertaining accompanied by little drawings of Gloria hamming it up.

    Rules made fun

    Not a new book by any means, but a fun one I use at the beginning of the school year to talk about rules in a fun way. Gloria acts out each of Officer Buckle's safety tips like never stand on a swivel chair and gets and keeps the children's attention. After reading it at school we discussed the rules we were going to have for our classroom to be safe and have fun at school while learning.

    Highly Recommended- entertaining for both kids and parents

    This is one of those books that is not only entertaining for children to read but also teaches them valueable life lessons. This classic children's book shows readers the importance of safety and friendship. Upon closer look at the illustrations in this book readers will love seeing how the pictures on each page fit perfectly with the page's words. There is not one spot on each page of this book that children not want will look at and be entertained. This humorously entertaining book is great for both parents and children to read together. I recommend this book to teachers of young students due to its concentration on the value of the buddy system as well as the importance of safety.

    An extraordinary book--for kids and their parents

    This is one of my all time favorite kids' books--one of those a parent can read over and over and still enjoy (and the kids still enjoy it as well). There are so many little jokes hidden on nearly every page, so much humor and truth, even a wee bit of pathos for Officer Buckle (soon resolved).

    Absolutely extraordinary, graphically, as well. If I could give it 15 stars I would.

    Cute story!

    We first found this book in the library and liked it so much we had to buy it. It is a cute story. My boys love it. It is also a fun way to talk about safety tips with your children.

    Officer Buckle and Gloria

    Officer Buckle is a police officer that goes to the schools and gives lectures on safety. The children never listen to him and always fall asleep. One day Officer Buckle gets a partner. The police department gets a new dog, Gloria. She is assigned to be Officer Buckle¿s partner. Now when Officer Buckle goes to the schools the children sit up and pay attention. They even applaud when the lecture is over. Officer Buckle is very happy. He does not know that Gloria was behind him doing tricks while he was talking. He gets several letters and invitations to go schools for safety lectures. Will he ever find out what Gloria is doing? This book has very bright and energetic pictures. The use of colors is great. There is a contrast between darks and lights that seem to bring the book to life. I would give this book a big two thumbs up. Peggy Rathmann was born in St. Paul Minnesota. She was raised on a farm with her two brothers and two sisters. She did not know what she wanted to do when she grew up. She went to several different colleges and changed her major several times. She finally found that she loved to write and illustrate children¿s books. She is now married and lives in Nicasio, Ca. Rathmann, Peggy. Officer Buckle and Gloria. New York: Putnam¿s, c1995.     Caldecott Winner!

    Officer Buckle knew all about safety and wanted to teach everyone else about safety. No one in Napville listened to Officer Buckle until he got a police dog by the name of Gloria. Gloria did things that made learning safety fun but it caused problems between her and Officer Buckle. What was Gloria doing and what did Officer Buckle do?The age level for this book is 4-8.     Safety Tips made fun.

    Peggy Rathmann did a wonderful job with the book Officer Buckle and Gloria. I am sure many children have enjoyed reading it. It's a fun educational book filled with safety tips for children, and of course, there not fun to learn if you do not have your best friend. All throughout the book Officer Buckle is yelling out safety tips such as ¿Never stand on a swivel chair, Always keep your shoelaces tied.' However, the main important one was ¿Always stick with your buddy,' and that¿s one of the lessons taught in the book

    Caldecott Winner Officer Buckle and Gloria

    I believe just about every kid loves dogs. I also believe that most kids like police officers. With this wonderful book you get both. Officer Buckle goes to schools in the town of Napville, where he gives safety speeches. Most kids really didn¿t pay much attention. Then, one day Officer Buckle got a police dog named Gloria. After that all the kids in the schools paid attention. Little did Officer Buckle know that it was because Gloria was reenacting the events he was discussing behind him. When Officer Buckle found it out he was disappointed because he though the safety speeches were a success because of him alone. He wouldn¿t give any speeches then, so they sent Gloria. When she got on he stage without Officer Buckle she totally bombed. She fell asleep on stage, and like before, none of the children paid any attention. In the end they find out that they need one another, which lead to the moral of the story, ¿Always stick with your buddy!¿ The books author, Peggy Rathmann, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1953.     Great Story!

    This stories theme is about an officer who knows more about safety than anyone in town, Napville. But, know one seems to want to listen to any of the safety tips that officer Buckle¿s has. His problem is soon solved with a dog named Gloria with her own safety tips. Now the town seems to listen to Gloria the dog and now the town only wants to see the dog not Office Gloria. This makes Office Buckles vow to give up safety tips all together. Will Gloria convince her friend to return to Napville¿s to give safety tips or not? A quote from this book is ¿Always stick with your buddy¿. The author of this book is Peggy Rathmann born in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from Mounds View High School in New Brighton, Minnesota. Then attended colleges everywhere, changing her major repeatedly. She eventually earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Minnesota.

    Officer Buckle and Gloria

    Have you ever had a misunderstanding with a friend and realized that you can¿t live without each other? Officer Buckle was a police officer at the local police station that around schools giving safety tips to children, but the children seem uninterested and not listening. Then one day officer Buckle gets a dog name Gloria for a partner, he takes Gloria with him from school to school realizing that for the first time everyone is listening to his safety tips. What Officer Buckle didn¿t know until he sees himself on TV was that they were amused by Gloria and not him. He was so disappointed and hurt that he stopped giving his safety tips. Gloria and everyone in town were saddened and miss both officer Buckle and Gloria working as a team. Officer Buckle herd of so many accidents happening that he and Gloria work everything out and returned to share their safety tips.     Before Gloria the dog came along, Officer Buckle and his safety tips were always ignored. But, as soon as Gloria started going with Officer Buckle when he made his safety speeches, the children started paying more attention to both Officer Buckle and Gloria, but especially Gloria (for she was doing tricks onstage behind his back). Officer Buckle didn¿t know it at the time, but Gloria was the reason that the children were paying more attention when he spoke. However, when Officer Buckle learned the truth about what Gloria was doing, he thought that no one really cared about what he was saying, and he stopped giving his speeches. He wasn¿t happy and neither was Gloria. Then, one day, a disaster occurred which changed both Officer Buckle¿s and Gloria¿s lives forever. Officer Buckle and Gloria is a great book for children of all ages. This book uses humor to teach some very important safety lessons such as ¿Never stand on a swivel chair¿ and ¿Keep your shoelaces tied¿. There is also another big lesson in this book, ¿Always stick with your buddy!¿ For, in many cases, two buddies can do together what one person cannot do alone.     Very cute and cathartic

    This book offers comedy and a moral. The illustrations of Gloria doing her tricks are comical especially for children. The story teaches that it¿s great to have a buddy. Officer Buckle is an expert of safety. He makes safety speeches at schools. The children are not interested in his speeches until he brings along a police dog named Gloria. Officer Buckle thinks he is not important anymore and stops doing the speeches. Can Gloria do the speeches alone?

    A book worth flipping.

    Poor Officer Buckle, he never seems to get a break until Gloria, the police dog shows up. Officer Buckle was always having accidents, so he knew more safety tips than anyone in Napville. He gave speeches at the local school, but the only good that come from that, was some naptime. Then Gloria arrived and everything began to change. The children began to love his his speech, 'the children clapped their hands and cheered. Some of them laughed until they cried.' Little did he know what Gloria was doing behind his back. The author, Peggy Rathmann, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, were she grew up with her two brothers and two sisters. She graduated from Mounds View High School in New Brighton, Minnesota. She attended colleges everywhere, changing her major often. Until she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in psychology. Later on in life she began to study commercial art at the American Academy in Chicago, fine art at the Atelier Lack in Minneapolis, and children's-book writing and illustration at the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. Her first book was Ruby the Copycat. She went on to receive the Caldecott Medal for Officer Buckle and Gloria in 1996. This book doesn't even need words. The illustrations are enough. They will keep you laughing with all the stunts the dog attempts. The book conveys a cute message throughout the story that soon becomes one of his safety tips. The tip is to 'always stick with your buddy.' A cute, funny story, that is definitely worth checking out. I enjoyed the book tremendously and has become one of my top ten children's book.     Hilarious Saftey Officer and his trusted side kick!

    Safety Officer Buckle and his side kick, Gloria, are the star attraction for school children in this hilarious comedy. When Officer Buckles tells the children ¿Gloria obeys my commands¿ he has no idea what is really going on as he gives his safety speech. The children really enjoy Officer Buckle¿s presentations. Officer Buckle is happy because ¿after his safety speech, there isn¿t a single accident,¿ however, Officer Buckle is unaware of the antics of Gloria. This story is well written and beautifully illustrated with bright colorful pictures. Sure to become a favorite of everyone that reads this story. Peggy Rathmann was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. She studied children's-book writing and illustration at Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California. Rathmann¿s awards include a Caldecott Medal for Officer Buckle and Gloria, in 1996. Good Night, Gorilla was recognized as an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1994. Ten Minutes till Bedtime was also recognized as an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1994.

    Buck buck

    One of my favorite books when I was little! It also put me in a good mood. I suggest this book to any kid who loves to read!

    Officer Buckle and Gloria

    Caldecott Wow! What a dog Gloria is doing back flips and head stands. Safety Officer Buckle gets upstaged by Gloria, his canine assistant. He and his dog travel from school to school, giving safety lectures. Buckle does not realize that Gloria is hamming it up behind his back during safety tip number one ¿KEEP your SHOELACES tied¿ and he thinks the kids love him. He is upset when he discovers the truth, but he and Gloria work out their differences in the end and become friends once more. Peggy Rathmann was born in St. Paul, Minnesota.     It is an outstanding story!

    I like the part of this story were Officer Buckle got a dog. The dog's name is Gloria. Officer Buckle is happy because Gloria went on every speech Officer Buckle went on. I really would recommend everybody to read this book. The story is happy. I want everybody to read because of the characters.

    Stick with your buddy!

    Officer Buckle has a dog named Gloria. he brings his dog to schools when he talks about safety. Gloria is very silly and the children love her. We love her. We learned to always stick with our buddies!

    I laughed out loud...

    A wonderful book with terrific illustrations and a great message. We are using this book in an injury prevention program in our schools.
