    Necessary, but incomplete

I have been tutoring students in the SAT for over 15 years, and earn over $300 an hour for my services in a major metropolitan area, but I don't want to promote myself here. Since most students out there can't afford an expensive tutor, let me give you the lowdown on this book. PROS: '1' practice tests from the real test makers, '2' realistic score results, unlike those from PR and Kaplan and such, '3' no-nonsense test skills advice, although this is a bit sparse. CONS: '1' No answer explanations, which are CRUCIAL to solid score improvement, '2' no skills lessons or vocabulary review, which are likewise essential. If you want the best self-preparation available, pair this book with McGraw-Hill's 'SAT 2009.' Use this for practice tests, and use the McGraw-Hill book for everything else. Also, if you're serious about improving your score, start 3 months before you plan to take the test. The MH book gives you an excellent self-diagnostic program. And lastly, avoid the gimmicky books that teach you the 'sneaky tricks.' They're bogus. Last piece of advice: read the New York Times Op-Ed page every day, and the Science Times on Tuesdays. On SAT day, you'll be glad you did!!

Great book, but there are some errors

I am a private math tutor and author of Math Study Guide for the SAT®, ACT®, and SAT® Subject Tests - 2010 Edition. I gave this book five stars because it has the best collection of practice tests. However I found some errors:

pg 618. The answer to problem 6-14 is 5, not 6.

    pg 641. Problem 13 should be c(x)=((600x-200)/x)+k.

pg 680. Decimal points are missing from problems 4-15 and 4-17.

pg 804. The decimal point is missing from problem 3-9.

pg 866. The answer to problem 7-17 is B, not C.

Caveat Emptor! Book Buyer Beware! A useful review by Frances Kweller founder of Kweller Prep SAT: Intense Prep for Intense Kids!,

I was very disappointed with this book, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. I needed more real, released exams for my students, and the official SAT Guide made sure to provide it. However, neither my students nor I were prepared for just how many errors exist throughout this edition. I truly feel that the College Board rushed to release its 10 Official Exams. I can't tell you how many errors I found in the math, reading, and writing sections. Some blogs even speculate that the `typos' may exist on purpose so that College Board can maintain its high levels of confusion with the SAT. (One math problem had 3 typos!) As I learned in Law School, "Caveat Emptor!" or "Buyer Beware."

Another aggravating aspect of this book is that the new edition has 7/10 exams that can be found directly from the old edition, except the new edition costs several dollars more. I found this particularly unfair to students who strive to study from the most updated material, when in reality, it's not so updated. This year, many students had to pay almost $25 for a book containing only 3 new tests, when they thought the College Board was selling 10. The only major difference is that now, tests 3-10 have lots and lots of typos. I can't help but wonder why the almighty College Board couldn't hire someone to proofread the book properly before it went to print.... unless the errors may in fact not be so 'unintentional.'

In conclusion, The Official SAT Guide is only good if you go through the questions with a highly knowledgeable friend or a reliable tutor. (May I suggest Kweller Prep for those living in the tri-state area?) Aside from the yellow errata sheet (that only some books provide), I found dozens of mistakes, which was quite aggravating as a tutor. I can only imagine how confusing it must be for students. I do, however encourage this purchase; there are 10 official exams, and you can at least benefit from that.

The Official SAT Study Guide: exactly what it claims to be

This SAT study guide is exactly what it claims to be: a guide to get you ready to take the SAT. This guide took the worry out of preparing for the test. Its practice tests are identical to the real test, so the test-taker knows what to expect. It is a perfect choice to buy when preparing for the SAT. Very helpful, comprehensive and reliable!

    Just took SAT

The only thing I used this book for were the practice test. This book is extremely confusing and doesn't prepare you for the test. I reccomend getting the Princeton Review, it's relatively simple yet it really helps by giving you more excercises and drills.

    Very Useful

I found it very convenient for the book to include the practice tests so that way you wouldn't have to print all the pages to the test.

It's the best, from the best.

When it comes to Collegeboard, it's smart to trust them. In reality, no one knows that SAT more than the people that make it. The book covers every aspect of the SAT including the "horrible" essay. With tips and tricks to mastering it, there's no way that after reading the book, you will have a much higher score than prior to your purchase. More importantly, however, is that once you complete the book's study guides, there won't be any surprises on the test. So, what are you waiting for? It's a must buy!

The Offical Study Guide is good, but...

This book provides some good practice questions for the student who will take the SAT. As a tutor, I find this book contains the most useful and relevant SAT style practice tests.

There is a way to use this book efficiently and get the most out of it: students can learn how to solve all the questions and problems very quickly if there is someone to show them what to look for and what the Collegeboard wants them to know. But then there are all the other time consuming and arduous ways to solve the problems and questions which students default to as a result of the conditioned learning process of the school system in America. A good tutor can undo all of this junk and separate the sense from the non sense.

The one problem I have with this edition is that is has many mistakes (a correction guide is usually stuffed in the front cover). It shouldn't be that difficult to proofread a book like this before printing, but I have a feeling that the Collgeboard printed tons of bad books, and to save money they just printed the correction sheets. A sign of the times I guess. America needs more work it can be proud of and more people and busineses that will pursue excellence over the almighty dollar. I think the Collegeboard really dropped the ball here setting a poor example for our students.

    A Must Have

This book is a must have for anyone prepping for the SATs. Other books can be challenging and intimidating to start off with. This book gives general overviews and lots of practice sections. Perhaps the most useful sections are the 8 practice tests in the back. These tests are the closest to what you will see on the SAT. No other book or company can come close to the real thing. I would also recommend this book over expensive prep courses as the price is right and it is more convenient. Its great that it can be done in just little bits at a time which makes the whole 'studying' thing more tolerable. Although its easy enough to buy the book, you really have to use it. you also should start early since it is a large book and takes some time to get through. I am a smart person who did well in school but struggled on standardized tests. This book helped me to overcome my fear of the test since i knew exactly what was coming.I ended up improving my score 250 points. and another 50 points with other materials. There are a few bad things about this book. First is that there are answer keys but a lot of the answers are not explained. Explanationas can be found on the web. Second is that there are no 'tips'. Yes there are ideas of how to approach sections but there are really no tips. Collegeboard wants the test to be fair, not give you a leg up. Overall this is the best SAT study book out there and I highly recommend starting your studying with it.

    I Also Recommend:

Great SAT guide, but a little too dry.

This is a great study guide for the SAT (it's made by the makers of the SAT after all), but it seemed too dry to me. I bought the Princeton SAT book with this one, and I preferred using the Princeton one more than this one. I did, however, start reading this one first! After about three weeks, I realized that this wouldn't work well for me. So I switched my focus to the the Princeton. If you are the kind of person who likes a really detailed and formal study guide, this is a great choice for you! But if you are a person who likes to keep things simple and enjoy while studying, this is the choice for you. It all depends on the kind of person you are. Anyway, this is a great study tool for studying for the SAT.

    Okay but...

You need Moodle or some type of link to your school website as we used this along with school site. Wasn't as good as other SAT books I've used.
However, everyone is different and I encourage you to take time to look at many books before choosing.

    Score higher on the SAT

This book was a great help, especially on the math section. Since it comes directly from the publisher, the book contains everything you need to know concerning the format and types of questions that are going to be asked on the SAT. Don't be intimidated by its thickness, (half of the book consists of the practice tests and to take only one practice test is plenty!) The reading section was good too but if you want lots of preparation on the reading, I suggest Barron's SAT book. A great way to prepare, even if you don't have a lot of time. Just browse through the math and reading sections and take a few practice questions and
