Overview

Oggie Cooder returns . . . this time showing what a party animal he can be (birthday party animal, that is)!

It's the party of the year!

Oggie Cooder's charving has already taken him to the top of the world. (Charving, if you didn't know, involves chewing and carving pieces of cheese.) But there's one place Oggie has never been allowed to go:

Donnica Perfecto's pool.

This year might be different. Donnica's mother has made her invite Oggie to a pool party. And Oggie couldn't be more excited. Not only will he finally make it into the pool, but there's also going to be mini hot dogs and a juggling bear.

The only problem? Donnica does not want Oggie at her party. And she'll do anything to stop him from coming!

Prrr-ip! Prrr-ip! Oggie Cooder fans will recognize the Oggie sound of happiness and will be ready to dive into the second book about Oggie, a boy with a unique personality all of his own. Excited about his bubble gum pink invitation to Donnica Perfecto's birthday pool party, Oggie thinks about the fun that is in store on Saturday. He wholeheartedly tries to find the perfect birthday gift for Donnica. He searches for cheddar jam because he overheard Donnica saying that is what she wanted for her birthday. Actually, Donnica has another wish. She does not want Oggie at her party and she has cooked up a foolproof plan to prevent him from attending the event. There are clever surprises, twist and turns in the story's plot and subplots. The illustrations capture a few of the events in the story. The border at the start of each chapter presents an interesting foreshadow of the story. The end of the story neatly ties up the subplots and plot for a satisfying ending. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
Kirkus Reviews
Excited by an invitation to a neighbor's birthday party, oddball fourth grader Oggie Cooder is willing to do almost anything to enjoy the perfect Donnica's kidney-shaped pool and piggies-in-a-blanket, even memorize the 100 rules the class queen bee hoped would keep him away. Familiar middle-grade humor and an accurate portrayal of elementary-school friendship issues characterize this welcome sequel about the cheese-charving (that's chewing and carving chunks of cheese) Wisconsin boy. Oggie's physical and social awkwardness are exaggerated but will certainly be recognizable to intended readers, as will the bullying Donnica and her sidekicks. With all his weirdnesses, Oggie still manages to find friends and even provide Donnica with the one thing she really wanted for her birthday. A fast-paced chapter book with cheerful cartoon illustrations provided by Holgate, this can easily be read on its own and will certainly win Oggie new fans. (Fiction. 7-10)
