Overview

Set in the world of the Newbery Honor-winning Ella Enchanted, this tale by beloved author Gail Carson Levine stars a clever heroine who is determined to defy expectations—and outwit a fairy's curse.

Evie is happiest when she is healing people, diagnosing symptoms and prescribing medications, with the help of her devoted friend (and test subject) Wormy. So when Wormy unexpectedly proposes to her, she kindly turns him down; she has far too much to do to be marrying anyone. And besides, she simply isn't in love with him.

But a certain meddling fairy named Lucinda has been listening in, and she doesn't approve of Evie's rejection. Suddenly, Evie finds herself transformed from a girl into a hideous, hungry ogre!

Stuck in this new and confusing form, Evie now has only sixty-two days to accept another proposal—or else be stuck as an ogre forever.

FEBRUARY 2019 - AudioFile

Narrator January LaVoy whisks listeners into Levine’s magical world in this companion novel to ELLA ENCHANTED. With warm and joyful tones, LaVoy introduces heroine Evie, a young healer practicing her valued trade from her mother’s house. Wormy, Evie’s closest friend, who assists in her practice, is characterized with a voice that holds both endless knowledge and refined wit. When Wormy’s marriage proposal to Evie goes awry, the meddling fairy, Lucinda, curses Evie with high-pitched and haughty words. Transformed into an ogre, Evie has 60 days to find someone who will propose to her and reverse the curse. On her quest, Evie meets several fantastical creatures whose differing opinions of her terrifying appearance and sweet character teach her more than Lucinda bargained for. From the Publisher

Longtime fans and new readers alike will devour this.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Readers new and old to Levine’s world will find much to love.” — Booklist

“Levine does an excellent job of getting into the mind of an ogre (Evie is overwhelmed by a sudden aversion to vegetables in all forms), and although the plot’s many strands are wide-ranging, she brings them together for a satisfying resolution.” — The Horn Book

“Like all of Levine’s heroines, Evie is complex, career-oriented, and likable as she bears up under seriously extraordinary pressures. With enough grotesqueries to satisfy the most transgressive tastes of juvenile humor and enough light romance to balance the scales, this trips lightly over a wide range of emotional appeals.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Levine offers another engaging story and heroine readers will adore. Evie is strong, independent, and smart, discovering herself and her own definition of love through experience and reflection... Plot and pacing will engage voracious and reluctant readers alike.” — School Library Journal

When 15-year-old healer Evie rejects her best friend's marriage proposal in front of the fairy Lucinda, she unknowingly sets off a kingdomwide chain of events that will shape the course of Kyrrian history. To punish Evie for rejecting an "exemplary" suitor, Lucinda transforms her into an ogre and decrees that she must accept a proposal within 62 days or remain an ogre forever. Ogres are hated and feared by Kyrrians: hairy, short-tempered, odoriferous, and magically persuasive, they eat humans and livestock with equal zeal. Hoping to learn persuasion in order to obtain a proposal, Evie joins a band of ogres and promptly falls for their human captive: a silver-tongued merchant named Peter. But will he propose? Though her time with the band is limited, her first-person narrative style meticulously notes her observations ("ogre hands are blink fast," and "the ogre heart has a triple beat"). A chance encounter soon draws Evie back to human civilization. Even though she ministers to plague-stricken humans honorably, she faces suspicion and hostility, but she also gains loyal friends and learns valuable lessons about love. Levine references the Portuguese fairy tale "The False Prince and the True" and "Beauty and the Beast" to explore social prejudice, although Evie's experiences as an ogre ultimately seem to reinforce how different she is more than they encourage solidarity. The book assumes a white default.Longtime fans and new readers alike will devour this. (Fantasy. 8-12)
