Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Catherine Callegari
Katie Carew is back with her best friends, Jeremy and Suzanne. When Suzanne is not allowed to see a new movie that everyone in school is talking about, she protests that she is being treated like a baby, but when Katie's secret magic wind blows her way, she is the one who ends up being the baby, literally. During her short time as Suzanne's three month old sister, Heather, Katie stops her friends from changing her diaper the only way she knows how. She tells them not to do it. Jeremy and Suzanne are stunned at Heather's ability to talk and waste no time in spreading the news. Katie feels horrible when everyone makes fun of her friends after Heather cannot repeat her vocal feat. In the end, Katie saves the day by using her newly learned ventriloquism to explain the talking baby. Everyone wants to learn to throw their voice and Jeremy and Suzanne are saved from being the laughing stock of the school. The final chapter contains ventriloquism hints and jokes to use in an act. Despite being a little clunky, the text is effective in clearly telling the story. The black and white illustrations by John and Wendy are interspersed throughout the text in full and partial page sizes. The illustrations compliment the story and add a nice dimension to it. This book is number three in the "Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo" series. Reviewer: Catherine Callegari
