Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8–Fans of the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series (Hyperion) will enjoy this witty assortment of profiles from Greek mythology. Each work begins with a quick description of the meaning and purpose of mythology as well as its current allusions from Valentine’s Day to Nike shoes. Then, readers are introduced to the wondrous array of monsters, mortals, gods, beasts, heroes, and goddesses, ranging from Aphrodite to Zeus, in four to six informative pages each. Features include a one-column resumé that lists “Divine Powers,” “Attributes,” and “Top 10 Things to Know about Me” for each subject and a running footer that encapsulates his or her “Family, Flings, Friends, and Foes.” Eye-catching fonts and full-color reproductions and cartoon illustrations accompany the fascinating descriptions and provide an excellent framework for understanding the Greek pantheon. While some of the jokes take corny to a new level, these books are guaranteed to garner the attention of mythophiles.
Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
Between Titans, Olympians and various other immortals, Greek mythology can be very confusing, but this volume breaks it down in a way that children will understand. Each character is given a profile page, with noteworthy stories included as well. Also, the big gods like Zeus, Hades and Poseidon are given extra attention in the form of cartoon maps and bonus stories. Since paintings depicting scenes from classical mythology are generally not PG-rated, underwear and swimsuits have been added to the images, often with comical results. While pop culture references and the use of a social network format might make this book age quickly, the easily digested information will keep this book relevant for today's youth. Extras like a family tree, tables of contents, a glossary, and a thorough index add to the usefulness of this volume. Reviewer: Tiffany Torbeck

    Funny, Easy-Access Mythology!

I got this book for my 10yo (but reads a bit above age-level) niece for Christmas to pair with Percy Jackson's Lightning Thief, and it turns out she liked it so much I got her more in the series for her birthday!
It's sort of a funny encyclopedia - cartoons and fun facts, fun to flip through. It makes mythology a bit less intimidating and more accessible since it's presented in a way that makes sense to modern readers.
    Very cool book!
