Quite a lot of data is packed into this early reader book about flowering plants. Narrated by The Cat in the Hat, the rhyming text and illustrations keep the spirit of Dr. Seuss alive. The text takes complex scientific information and breaks it down into more digestible pieces. However, the material can be overwhelming for young readers because much ground is covered at a quick pace. Young readers will encounter many new vocabulary words, such as pollen, photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and embryo. Guidance from caretakers and teachers is necessary to aid in the understanding of this book. Children are likely to have many, many questions about what they read here. The book represents an impressive effort to engage young readers with scientific concepts and the natural world. A glossary and index are provided at the back of the book, as is a list of additional books about the subject matter.     Definite Teacher's Friend!

    We used the book in our 7th grade science class to teach about plants. The book had several terms that we were teaching (21 actually). As we read the book the students filled in a vocabulary chart with the definitions, hints to the definitions, and pictures to help them remember. We then had the students do a vocabulary matching game to check for understanding. All levels of learners had success with the words. Thank you for such a great book, and we will definitely be seeking out others in the series for other lessons.
