It has long been an open secret that one of Steve Allen's lesser talents is as a composer/lyricist. After all, who else has written 6,800 songs and only had one hit ("This Could Be the Start of Something Big")? Overview

It has long been an open secret that one of Steve Allen's lesser talents is as a composer/lyricist. After all, who else has written 6,800 songs and only had one hit ("This Could Be the Start of Something Big")? Singer George Bugatti, whose voice is reminiscent of Mel Torme's (although without the scatting), swings his way through a dozen of Allen's better pieces on this likable set. The interpretations are concise, the backup quintet (pianist Steve Rawlins, Gene Burkert on reeds, guitarist Grant Geissman, bassist Jim DeJulio and drummer Dave Tull) is fine, and this light jazz/middle-of-the-road pop date is better than expected.
