Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This "Land of Liberty" series entry includes information about the state's geography, weather, history, government, economy, and people. Text is straightforward and informational, unmarred by italicized vocabulary (although there is a glossary), and current with today's newspapers. Featured are sidebars, maps, an almanac of statistics, a timeline of important events, famous quotes, trivia facts, a recipe that applies to the state's agricultural strengths, and notes about pro but not college sports, which is an omission given the popularity of the Ohio State Buckeyes and their winning the national football championship in the year before the book was published. Illustrations get the job done and depict buildings, famous people and archival material, and are shortly captioned. Special sidebar sections include information about the prehistoric Mound Builders, Oliver Hazard Perry's victory over the British in 1813, Cincinnati writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, the Goodyear Blimp, the company that makes Etch-A-Sketch, and other trivia kids will like. Useful for report writers, the information is easily locatable, with an index, more suggested informational but not fiction-based reading, and one Internet site that is an omnibus location set up and updated by the publisher to key readers to useful sites with more information about the Buckeye State. 2003, Capstone Press,

Gr 3-5-Bright graphics and appealing design round out these serviceable books. Each one begins with a discussion of a unique feature of the state, such as Monument Rocks National Monument in Kansas and Ohio's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Next come discussions of distinctive land features, climate, plants, animals, and the environment. Each state's history and the people who shaped it are covered, and there is an overview of the government, politics, and economy. Cultural notes mention sports teams, famous artists, and more. Each text includes a recipe for a native dish, an almanac of fast facts, and a limited time line. What saves these from becoming dry restatements of facts are the colorful graphics on each page, including reproductions, photos, charts, and maps that are interspersed with highlighted quotes and trivia. Informative titles for reports.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
