Ohio is the birthplace of seven U.S. Presidents, authors including Nobel winner Toni Morrison, sharpshooter Annie Oakley, and inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright and Thomas Edison. Part of the "World Almanac Library of the States" series, this book presents a comprehensive look at The Buckeye State, from its history, geography, and famous people to its politics, government, economy, and culture and lifestyle. A History-At-A-Glance time line places Ohioan events into a larger historical context. A Fast Facts section depicts state information such as population, land area, motto, state flowers, and even the state beverage—tomato juice!—in an easy-to-read format. Visually stimulating, the illustrations and photographs are well placed and selected. Effective charts and several maps, keyed to particular topics such as physical geography or the economy, enhance the text, as do a bibliography, thorough index, and a few suggested Internet sites to visit for additional information. The volume will be a useful addition to the classroom or library shelf. 2002, World Almanac Library, Patterson <%ISBN%>0836851242

Gr 4-7-What stands out in these overviews is the number of useful tables and statistics scattered throughout. A "Fast Facts" section at the beginning of each book covers most of the questions typically required for state reports. The volumes are well organized, and the crisp layout and well-captioned, color photographs are appealing. Good supplements to the "Enchantment of America" series (o.p.) and "From Sea to Shining Sea" series (both Children's).-Donna L.
