Children's Literature - Amie Rose Rotruck
Even children are aware of the high prices of gas these days. In this book, Jill Sherman explains how the cost of oil is affected by technology, supply and demand, and worldwide politics. In the first chapter, she gives background to the factors affecting the cost of oil, including describing the 1973 oil crisis. She then gives both sides to the argument The question "Are we facing an oil crisis?" is discussed in the next two chapters, one dealing with "Signs Pointing to an Oil Crisis" and "Signs Pointing to No Oil Crisis." The effects politics have on oil are explored in the following two chapters, one dealing with U.S. domestic politics and the other with international relations. Oil is also the subject of much environmental debate, which leads to discussions of global warming and alternative energy sources. But not everyone is in favor of alternative energy, so Sherman delves into both sides of the argument. This book does an excellent job of laying out both facts and opinions about such an important topic in today's world. Sherman remains unbiased throughout, allowing the reader to draw his own conclusions. A timeline, glossary and further reading section help make this book an excellent source of knowledge.
