Read an Excerpt

How does an artist translate what she or he sees into a painting? It isn't as simple as plunking down two apples or looking out the window and then copying what you see.
This lesson is all about what goes into making an interesting painting. It will show you how to effectively arrange your subject, how to accurately sketch the subject onto the canvas, and how to successfully develop and finish the painting. Our subject will be a simple still life.
This lesson is divided into four parts. In the first part you will learn how to make your painting interesting and then apply what you learn to the arrangement of your chosen fruit or vegetables. In the second part you will learn how to draw your objects accurately onto the canvas. In the third part you will be guided in the painting of your still life; we will use what you have learned about color and shading in the previous lessons to paint fruit that looks as if you could pick it off the canvas. In the final part I will demonstrate standard painting procedures and paint a still life.

    First Prize Winner!!!

I retired from a career in educational administration in the summer of 2009. Found this book purely by chance so that I could reconnect with painting after forty years. ( I had painting in high school.) I did every lesson and reread instructions over and over. I now have a painting on display at a university gallery where I took first place and received a monetary award also! This is the first time I have every won anything for art and I owe it all to this author.

    FANTASTIC!

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will will treasure this book as a step-by-step guide to oil-painting and a wonderful source of information to refer to again and again. It is indeeed a "course" that the person wanting to start oil painting would be wise to follow. Also it is a great review for the person who has done oil painting in the past and would like to take it up again. More than this, the presentation of the instruction is so well-organized, comprehensive and well-written that people already painting in oils have much to gain from it. I've spent most of my life in academia so I know an exceptional instructional book when I see one - and this one is superior to the vast majority of the art instruction books I've used in the past.
I give it my highest rating and recommend it without reservation.
