Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This husband-and-wife team combines Mark's work as a fine artist, illustrator, and art instructor with Mary's expertise as a writer and literature teacher. Having published Watercolor for the Absolute Beginner and Drawing for the Absolute Beginner, they have hit another home run. Unlike less successful art books for beginners, this one starts simply and takes the rank amateur to a satisfying level of accomplishment. Projects include monochromatic rocks, a sunset over a beach, mountains with primary colors, and a still life of pears. The accompanying DVD offers useful demonstrations of two complete paintings. This has an edge over Linda Birch's briefer You Can Paint Oils.

    Recommend for True Beginners!

I had never painted anything but the walls in my house. This book explained everything-what supplies to use, techniques, etc. It gives step-by-step instructions on completing several different paintings, which allowed me to complete my first "masterpiece" successfully! I am also taking a "beginner" oil painting class and I feel that I've been much more successful using the book than I have in my class.

    Don't Bother

I got this book hoping it would help me start out in oil painting. I bought all the junk the author said I should which costs a small fortune. One or two of the examples were fine but the rest never did turn out like they were suppose to. The author is vague on alot steps and so it leaves you kind of lost as to how he got something to look a certain way or how he did something so it would come out looking right. The DVD that comes with it is enough to put anybody in a coma and really doesn't help all that much as far as helping someone paint. Save your money and alot of wasted time by looking at some other books, this one just isn't worth it.
