Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- Two interesting and informative introductions to timely topics. Each begins with a description of a widely publicized disaster and then backtracks to explain how it happened. Following clear, fairly detailed descriptions of how nuclear reactors work and how oil is extracted and transported, Lampton briefly discusses some similar incidents and looks at how such accidents can be prevented or how the effects of those that do take place can be lessened. He is unbiased in his presentation of these sometimes controversial energy sources, and doesn't offer simplistic solutions. Both books are illustrated with good-quality full-color photographs and charts. The maps in Nuclear Accident , however, are potentially confusing, but this doesn't detract from the overall quality of the book. --Janet K. Hamilton, Museum of Science, Boston
