Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Since the explosion last spring that resulted in the huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, information for youngsters on this topic has been needed. While it is not easy to explain oil spills for early learners, this volume does a creditable job. In just 24 pages, major details are related in fairly simple language. Readers learn what oil is and where it comes from; oil spills and their consequences for land, animals and water; the Exxon Valdez spill; the Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill as well as cleanup efforts for the environment and wildlife. Excellent photographs are integrated to further illustrate and clarify the text. Vocabulary is explained where it occurs on the pages and in a glossary, which is a bit redundant. Many sections contain an "Oil Fact" that provides further depth. An index, bibliography and Internet sites add to the book's usefulness. If other titles in this "First Facts" series have proved helpful, or if further material on this subject is required, consider adding this to the collection. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
