First featured in Geisert's Oink , these vociferous piglets are back for more noisy hijinks. When the excitement of a new day beckons, off they scamper, leaving mother pig sleeping soundly--or so they think. But as the sun rises and contented squeals echo over the cornfields, this matriarch is soon in hot pursuit of her errant offspring. An ear of corn tucked into each snout, the endearing porkers lead their disgruntled parent on quite a romp, up stream and down dale, their high-pitched wails drowned out by her thunderous roar. Finally, the chase draws to a close and, in subdued single file, the piglets return home. Graceful etchings in black, white and pale pink capture the riotous freedom experienced by the piglets, while the title words, placed in amusing sizes and configurations over these runaways, perfectly convey abundant variations of porcine palaver. This witty and intelligent picture book is sure to elicit squeals of laughter. Ages 4-8. (Mar.)

PreS-Gr 1-- Geisert's comical piglets are back for another nearly wordless adventure. This time it's a sunrise romp into the cornfield (via conveyor shute) to sneak some of their favorite crop. Then, with an angry mama hot on their trail, they swim to a tiny island in the stream, where they pig out on the contraband ears. Wise to their antics now, a weary mother discourages a return trip to the field and routes her capricious offspring home. Throughout, the only word uttered (but repeatedly, with various inflections denoted by the size of the type and its arrangement on the page) is ``oink.'' Geisert's black on pale gray etchings (with pink-tinted pigs) range from two per page to two-page spreads--all of them finely detailed and nicely formatted. Those who enjoyed Oink (Houghton, 1991) will, no doubt, relish this short adventure as well. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

What would "you" title the sequel to "Oink" ? Given that both stories are told with only one word, "OINK" (or in cases of dire emergency, "OOOOOOOINK", or extreme distress, "OOOOOOOOO . . ".), Geisert sets the pattern for a series of mind-boggling dimensions. In the latest adventure, the eight little piglets slip out of the barnyard, steal into the cornfield, pick ears of corn, and swim out to an island to elude their mother's determined pursuit. The expressive etchings, in which the pink pigs provide the one touch of color, show once again that illustrations need not be pretty to be beguiling. Another satisfying, near-wordless (or at least, untranslated) adventure for Geisert's porkers.

Meet the Author

Arthur Geisert

Award-winning children's book author Arthur Geisert's pigs are legendary in the world of children's books. They carve ice sculptures, teach Roman numerals, create ingenious machines and get up to all kinds of antics. Did Arthur grow up on a farm? No. He grew up in LA and claims not to have seen a pig until he was an adult. Trained as a sculptor in college, Geisert learned to etch at the Otis Art Institute in LA. Geisert has published just about a book a year for the past 30 years and every one of his books has been illustrated with etchings.
