Overview

The American musical reached maturity on March 31, 1943, with the premiere of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's debut collaboration, Oklahoma! Never before had a show's score, libretto, and choreography been so united in storytelling. The results were sensational. Starring Alfred Drake, Joan Roberts, and Celeste Holm, Oklahoma!was also the first musical immortalized in an original cast album, allowing listeners to relive the magic of "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Kansas City," "People Will Say We're In Love," "Pore Jud Is Daid" (an alternate take is included) and the foot-stompin' title tune. This is a classic recording as well as a timeless work of art.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
The Broadway opening of Oklahoma! in 1943 is remembered as a landmark in American musical theater. The show was the first written by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, though both were theater veterans. Rodgers & Hammerstein turned out an exuberant, tuneful score in which all the songs grew out of the characters and the situations, an unusual approach in musical theater, where songs often had little relationship to the action. The point was made right at the start, when the choral number that opened most musicals was eschewed in favor of an off-stage leading man coming on and singing "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'." It ran over five years, becoming the longest running musical in Broadway history up to its time. The score threw off several hits and standards, including "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "People Will Say We're in Love," and the stirring title tune. Although there had been a tradition of recording music from stage works in their original form with the stage performers in Great Britain, such recordings were only occasional in the U.S., and the idea of putting together an album of several 78 rpm records containing a show's major songs as performed on-stage was relatively new. On the day that Oklahoma! opened, the American record industry was closed down by a musicians strike but shortly after Decca Records settled with the union, company president Jack Kapp brought the Oklahoma! principals together in the recording studio and cut 12 of the show's songs for a six-record album. The result, Oklahoma! [Original Broadway Cast], was a commercial smash that forever changed the record business and led to the domination of record sales by the cast and soundtrack albums for the next 20 years.

I am really surprised at how well the voices match those in the movie musical. I say that's promising.

Just to clear things up...The performers on this CD are NOT the actors in the 1955 movie version starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae. This CD has the actors and actresses from the 1943 stage version. All of the performers, including Alfred Drake and Joan Roberts, on this recording have wonderful, rich, expressive voices. Unlike other modern musicals that make headlines and then disappear, this musical has endured for over 60 years and still remains loved. The songs include upbeat, cheerful pieces as well as one of the most beloved love songs of all time, "People Will Say We're In Love." And, of course the comical "I Cain't Say No" is one of the musical's highlight numbers. This recording includes a couple of songs that are only found in the stage version such as "Lonely Room" and "It's A Scandal! It's An Outrage!" There is also an extended version of "Out of My Dreams" on this CD, which is only briefly sung by Shirley Jones in the movie version. This recording is sure to be loved by anyone- from Rodgers and Hammerstein experts to a newcomer to the musical genre. I reccomend this CD to anyone who enjoys the movie version and anyone who wants to listen to one of the definitive musicals in American history. It doesn't get much better than this!
