Overview

Old Christmas will bring you back to the Solemn and non-consumerist Christmas of the old as our fathers knew it.

Of all the old festivals, Christmas awakens the strongest and most heartfelt associations.

There is a tone of solemn and sacred feeling that blends with our conviviality, and lifts the spirit to a state of hallowed and elevated enjoyment.

The services of the church about this season are extremely tender and inspiring.

They dwell on the beautiful story of the origin of our faith, and the pastoral scenes that accompanied its announcement.

    Christmas Classic!

Old Christmas by Washington Irving helped shaped Christmas that we all know and love. Irving along with Dickens introduced to the public Christmas traditions that sporead the popularity of the holiday. In Old Christmas Irving writes about his visit to the fictional Bracebridge family estate in Shropshire England some time after the battle of Waterloo. This is a great read, though the first chapter can be a little difficult but after that I found it to be a fun and quick read. The illustrations by Randolph Caldcott are wonderful and complements the story.

    Great holiday reading

I don't have this particular edition, but 'Old Christmas' by Washington Irving is a delightful excerpt from 'The Sketch Book,' written around 1820. The narrator travels in Yorkshire and enjoys a family Christmas which features all the good old-fashioned 17th and 18th century English foods and entertainments. Most enjoyable to re-read annually as a reminder of how Christmas was celebrated in the old days.

Scrooge before there was a scrooge

This a cheap knock-off of an edition of this title published by Chapman Billies a few years ago & which B&N had a superstore distribution.ISBN 0939218151 It is still available. Even the trade reviews listed above are for this earlier publication. Caveat emptor
