Old Christmas by Washington Irving helped shaped Christmas that we all know and love. Irving along with Dickens introduced to the public Christmas traditions that sporead the popularity of the holiday. In Old Christmas Irving writes about his visit to the fictional Bracebridge family estate in Shropshire England some time after the battle of Waterloo. This is a great read, though the first chapter can be a little difficult but after that I found it to be a fun and quick read. The illustrations by Randolph Caldcott are wonderful and complements the story.

I don't have this particular edition, but 'Old Christmas' by Washington Irving is a delightful excerpt from 'The Sketch Book,' written around 1820. The narrator travels in Yorkshire and enjoys a family Christmas which features all the good old-fashioned 17th and 18th century English foods and entertainments. Most enjoyable to re-read annually as a reminder of how Christmas was celebrated in the old days.

I love Old Christmas, but this particular edition looks terrible on nook. I can hardly read the print and all of the illustrations are blurred. A cheap edition not even worth the one dollar I paid.

Have you ever wondered how Christmas would've been celebrated on an old English country estate? Welcome to Bracebridge Hall ~~ & a holiday done the old fashioned way ~~ with roaring fires, yule logs, mulled cider, games, plenty of good food, & a collection of the merriest folks you ever spent time with. For that is exactly what you do in Washington Irving's "Old Christmas". And a devilish jovial time 'tis, t'be sure. Bracebridge Hall is decked out for the holidays in all its old fashioned English finery. So, accept their hearty invitation, make yourself comfortable & enjoy the warmest, merriest Christmas you've ever spent. And, mind you, once you sample the wonders of such a holiday, you'll always return for another holiday visit.

This a cheap knock-off of an edition of this title published by Chapman Billies a few years ago & which B&N had a superstore distribution.ISBN 0939218151 It is still available. Even the trade reviews listed above are for this earlier publication. Caveat emptor
