Overview

With simple beauty, Nancy Wood tells a loving story about a wise creature's last day, illuminated with masterful illustrations by Max Grafe.

Old Coyote's muzzle is turning white, and his steps are slow. He spends most of his time basking in the sun and remembering. Chasing rabbits, raising pups with Mrs. Coyote, gathering with his friends on the mountain and howling at the moon — it's been a long, full life, and he's grateful for it. But could it be time for him to take one last journey?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This sensitive story follows an aging coyote as he realizes he has grown old and remembers how he experienced life in his past. He walks through familiar fields and stops at an old stream to say hello. He remembers how his howl used to be so loud and now it is squeaky. He stops by the rabbit hole where he used to catch rabbits. He walks by the saguaro that gave him shade, and then he comes to his den that he built years ago. Old Coyote and Mrs. Coyote talk about their children and grandchildren, and while he sleeps, she thinks about all the good times they had. During the night, Old Coyote leaves and meets his animal friends. He thanks them and tells them goodbye. He climbs to the top of the mountain and finds a perfect rock where he rests and dreams "his way into a whole new world." This gentle story about death is written in thoughtful prose with lovely illustrations in light brown tones. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
