All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The Collected Works was a triple-disc box set that included all of the duo's albums, but no rarities. For average fans -- even fairly dedicated ones -- that set contained most everything they would need, even if the sound quality was a little below average. Old Friends is a three-disc box set that was designed to replace The Collected Works, but it fails to achieve its goals despite its improved remastered sound. Part of the reason is the content itself -- all five albums plus the rarities on this set could have fit on three discs, offering a real complete recorded studio works, but the compilers decided to truncate the albums and toss on a handful of rarities. ...

Even if it isn't all it could have been, the box isn't bad -- after all, it features all of the hits, most of the major album tracks, the 1975 reunion "My Little Town," and a couple of good rarities like "Blues Run the Game" -- and it may be enough for some casual fans.

A Wonderful Visit with some Old Friends

Although this may not be the definitive Simon and Garfunkel (missing songs from their earlier albums), it is a wonderful collection, showcasing their talents and the variety of sounds that they could command. It was wonderful to be able to put in the three disks and just remember all the events in my life that were spent with this music as a background. I was particularly taken by the rendition of "A Most Pecular Man" as I had never heard it performed that way and the performance added to the haunting quality of the words. There are some great new pieces that I had only heard a couple of times before along with live recordings and all my favorites. This is a great set to get as an introduction to the music of Simon and Garfunkel and a good reminder for those who already know it.
