Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-- Another classic text given a fresh visual setting. The 14 farm animals are here, as are the familiar lines of doggerel and a page of sheet music. Unlike Glen Rounds' bold minimalist version (Holiday, 1989) but similar to Carol Jones' detailed narrative (Houghton, 1989), Cauley takes readers through a day with a rotund, bespectacled, overalled, checker-shirted, floppy straw-hatted farmer. Double-page spreads each house five lines of text and a scene containing several of the animals noted therein. In the morning, the aging gent gathers eggs in the coop while the chickens seem to object. At the lunch table with Mrs. MacDonald, the dogs engage in mild and tolerated mischief. Towards evening the farmer leads a score of sheep down an unpaved road to the distant farmyard. The mood is consistently ``all's-right-with-the-world.'' Cauley achieves this emotional quality by creating naturalistic creatures in landscapes or interiors that are detailed enough to establish a benign environment without the distraction of curiosity-provoking clutter. Flowers, tools, and farm crops tend to be used as much for their decorative features as for supplying information. Sketchy black outlines of the major actors delineate varieties of characteristic actions while transparent colors create pastoral backgrounds and the modeling of forms that depict healthy, clean, happy animals. The appeal of this version will be to those for whom subtlety is not demanded and those who perceive the world as a peaceable kingdom. --Kenneth Marantz, Art Education Department, Ohio State University, Columbus
