The Old Man’s Boy Grows Older by Robert Ruark is a very well written feel good sequel to his first book. He continues to use his very signature style of writing in which he looks back on and tells serious stories of him and his grandpa, while maintaining to have it relate back to a lesson he learned. He also maintains some comedy throughout the book to lighten it up at times.  The major theme throughout the book is the coming of age and how the author has grown up to be the man he’s become because of his grandfather who has since passed away. It also reintroduces the theme with the author’s younger protégés and apprentices. What I really liked about the book, is that he did not drift away from his original writing, he stuck with everything he had in the first book and related back to some of those moments which was good for the reader to get a little reminder of what happened in the previous book. This book is well fitted for people who enjoy the outdoors: hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking could all relate to this book. This book could also be enjoyed by people that have been very close with elders and have learned valuable lessons from them. It does have a lot of hunting and fishing stories so one who is against these subjects would not get as much enjoyment out of it. My only complaints is that some of the vocabulary is not for the modern reader, some of the words are words that have been used in the past and are not known or used now. I personally think it would be a great heartwarming movie to have all the stories that the old man and the boy went through and then show the boy later in life becoming the old man.  Overall I would give this book a 9/10. Definitely in my top three of books I have read.

I first read this book as monthly installments in field and stream magazine in the 1950s I was not lucky enough to know my grandfathers but had similar experiences with my father and uncles along the coast of Texas, the Tennessee River and the Tom bigbee in Alabama I bought the book and remembered many experiences from my own youth during the reading. The book is well written and was very true to life for the times before government became so deeply involved.
