Old/Quartet Sessions based on 0 ratings. 1 reviews.
This set collects all the recordings made by the group that soon became the Art Ensemble of Chicago: Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, and the excellent Phillip Wilson on drums, the only recordings he made with the group. These brilliant young men were inventing something new, full of wit and energy, and with a magical pulse that did not depend on four-beats-to-the-bar. Very well recorded in a basement in Chicago in 1967 and remastered by label boss Chuck Nessa, the set gleams with musical intelligence and confidence, and is essential to an understanding of Chicago's musical energy, and why the AACM, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, was the most successful of the black music collectives that were formed in that decade, still going today.
