This comprehensive exploration of the Old Testament is ideal for those who know little or nothing about the Bible. Exceptionally readable, it uses a clear, lively writing style, up-to-date scholarship, and interesting illustrations and maps to explore the development of Old Testament literature and the geographical and historical background necessary to understand it. Follows the traditional order of the Books, except Ruth, through 2 Kings. Then examines each Book in its historical context. Explores the crucial roles of women as well as men throughout. For anyone interested in the Old Testament, especially those with no previous knowledge of the subject.

In preparing this sixth edition of The Old Testament Story, I have chosen to enlist the competent assistance of Dr. Mark McEntire of Belmont University. Since I have been away from the university classroom for ten years, I felt it necessary to seek help from one who is in touch with present-day students. Dr. McEntire has contributed to this edition in at least two important ways: (1) he has revised the study questions at the end of each chapter, and (2) he has given brief descriptions of the literary structure of each book of the Old Testament, a fuller explanation of which follows.

This textbook follows the story told by the Old Testament about the people of Israel and their God. Sometimes the divisions of the story coincide with the biblical books and sometimes they do not. Some biblical books participate more directly in the telling of the story than do others. In recent decades, increasing attention has been given to the literary artistry of the biblical books. Regardless of the stages of development the various books of the Old Testament went through and their relationship to each other, they stand as separate books in the final form of the canon. Most, if not all, of the thirty-nine books of the Protestant Christian Old Testament have a discernible organization as pieces of literature. In appropriate places, this textbook will attempt to illustrate the structure of each biblical book. One additional problem concerns the treatment of books that appear in pairs or in a larger group. These would include the books of Samuel, the books of Kings, the books of Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, and the Book of the Twelve (the Minor Prophets). This is why the Hebrew Biblecounts only twenty-four books in its contents rather than thirty-nine, even though its contents are identical to those of the Protestant Christian Old Testament. In these cases the discussions will attempt to give attention to both levels of structure, that of the individual books and that of the scroll which contains the whole grouping.
