All Music Guide - Chris True
The debut album by Canadian new wave-influenced indie rockers Metric was released in 2003. Over the years, thanks to the band's successful touring and subsequent releases (all of which have been well received), the album went gold in the band's home country. A solid debut, the album features fan favorites such as "Hustle Rose" and "The List." For fans of later Metric work, such as the stellar Fantasies, this makes for necessary listening.

    Metric=Succexy

From I.O.U. to Love is a Place, this album never ceases to amaze. Pretty much every song lifts you off your feet with its unique sound. Every song is put together fantastically and you just can't help but tap your feet. Emily Haines' unique voice fits well with the pulsing beats and keyboard. I am a high school student that is sick of the shallowness of mainstream music, and this album cures it. It has the ability to make you take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are one of the superficial people that they poke fun at. I highly recommend this album, as well as their most recent one: Live it Out. Their other album, Grow Up and Blow Away, is also great.

So much fun to listen to!!

I love Metric!!! They're absolutely amazing. I dont know what I love more: the vocals, the drums, the guitars, or all of it put together in a genius way. This is the only cd that will always be in my car and the one that i can listen to without ever skipping tracks. Not to mention it's a lot of fun to sing along to.

Everything has been done...but not this well!

This CD ROX! I was in the mood for some new tunage and kept hearing this name "Metric" all over the place...heard one of the songs maybe a few times on the radio and bought this on a lark. This entire CD is amazing. Every song is my favourite @ different points in the day. I don't like comparing music to other music; "they sound like XYZ." But if you're looking for rock with killer vocals/lyrics/rocking band/cool keys to dance around to - this is it! Looking forward to seeing them live in a few weeks! Stop...static...switch screens...split screens.

    AMAZING

this album is like drugs, i cant stop listening to it. it is really amazing, finally indie kids get their own dance music!! besides the music being so catchy, the album really says something, they attack philosophy, politics, and just everyday life.

    words cannot describe

This band has serious talent, and "Old World Underground" proves that. Metric shares members with another wonderful band, Broken Social Scene, and most notably (in my opinion), Emily Haines. This girl is extremely talented, delivering each and every song with her amazing, melodic voice, and also playing the keyboard. I don't think you have to like or relate to only a certain genre(s) of music to enjoy Metric; buy this album, and you won't be disappointed.

    Buy it!!

I seldom come across an album that I enjoy as much as I've loved Old World Underground. This is one of the very few CDs I own in which I've enjoyed EVERY song featured within it! There's just nothing wrong with it, in my opinion, and I listen to a substantial amount of music across a great many number of genres. The indie and electro kids will love this because of it's poppy, dance-party feel on tracks like "Succexy" and "Combat Baby". If you're more partial to love songs and slow music with lyrics that are absolutely to die for in their simplicity and surprising elegance, then "Calculation" and "The List" are absolutely perfect for you. I myself am absolutely in love with my latest theme song--"Hustle Rose". This album is magnificent, I cannot get enough of this--literally. I've bought it in every medium I could possibly find. All I have left is to seek out a vinyl version of this, and I'm set! You cannot go wrong with this album, I highly recommend it, it's a fabulous CD to own for veteran fans or newcomers.

    Simply fantastic!

I think people need to experience this band by themselves to truly appreciate it. Listen with headphones, in your car with the windows down, and in your bed naked. Absolutely amazing.

    A breath of fresh air!

Metric is what the alternative/rock world has been needing for years. This band will leave your jaw hanging after listening to the album for the first time, and almost in a trance like motion, you'll find yourself hitting repeat over and over again. The best comparison I could give this band is, Interpol. Only faster paced and more creative. With innovative lyrics, very talented musicians, and one of the sweetest, most talented voices I've ever heard in Emily Haines, Metric has churned out what I would call the best alt. rock album in years. The travesty is that, this band is still sheltered from the mainstream. Because I know they have the potential to be huge. Every person I've played this album for has gone nuts over it. Its hard to pick favorite tracks because the album is very diverse and every track will grab hold of you in a different way, but I'd call "Combat Baby", "Wet Blanket", and "Dead Disco" standout tracks.

    Falling bombs and shooting stars

If you're looking for an album that's short, to the point, and every bit as poppy and smart, then Metric is your band. Songs such as "Combat Baby" and "Hustle Rose" make sure that you can still bob your head while driving, without forgetting the soft but striking voice of their songstress Emily. The best part about the album? To the point. It never drags on to the point where you can't find yourself turning it off at any point before it's done.

    Totally Sweet

Basically, this album is amazing. There have been times where I've listened to this album all the way through, EVERY SINGLE SONG, 3+ times, seriously. It never gets old, the songs are all so awesome and just flow right into each other, and it's all over way before it should be. You're seriously missing out if you don't listen to this album.

    Great!

I first heard a song from this album when "Combat Baby" appeared on MTV's you hear it first. I immediately tried to buy the CD. I found it hard to locate if you don't buy it over the internet, but hopefully that will change. I love the sound of this group and I think they did a really great job with this!
