I tried the brownie recipe that is listed on Micki Sannar's website. After that I was hooked and sent my husband out immediately to purchase the book. I have made a lot of the recipes in the book and I have loved every single one of them! Without even mentioning anything about the book, I have had family and friends who have tasted the desserts ask where did you get this recipe?! They are totally shocked when I tell them there is no trans fat etc. in the desserts!
The book is absolutely beautiful! The book is beautifully designed with tons and tons of color pictures! There are also really great stories, tips etc. This book would be beautiful displayed on your living room table. Display at your own risk though! Someone may snatch this book!
The book is really informative on olive oil and its benefits and the different types of olive oils out there. I thought maybe the olive oil would give the recipes a funny taste, but it adds so much of a wonderful subtle flavor! It also adds a very nice, but subtle, smell while you are mixing and/or preparing the desserts! I asked a professional chef to name the mystery ingredient in the brownies and she couldn't. It has a very subtle earthy taste, but it doesn't scream olive oil like I thought it would. I actually really love the subtle smell and subtle flavor it adds.
The book has lots of recommendations of things you can substitute for people on special diets (lactose free, vegetarian etc). It also teaches you how to substitute wheat flour into the recipe for some of the flour, I have really loved this option!
The book isn't all about sweet desserts (although there are plenty of those) there are also lots of recipes for items like sweet breads (you have to try the lemon poppy seed bread).
My personal favorites that I have tried (the whole book basically) are:
Micki's Simple Brownies
Extreme Lemon Sugar Cookies
A New Toll Cookie
Lemon Laced Oatmeal Blueberyy Cookies
Grandma J's Oatmeal Cookies
Almond-Lemon Poppy Seed Bread
I was also really surprised to learn about all the positive health effects olive oil provides! Did you know that olive oil has anti-oxidants? And the monounsaturated fats can actually be healthy for your heart? I did a lot of reading through other sources to verify the claims the cookbook made and found every claim to be validated by other major respectable sources.
This book is fantastic! A must have in your kitchen! Your friends and family will continually ask you where you got your recipe. All of this and it is healthy for you! What could be better?!

Love this book. It's informative and the recipes are well written and easy to follow. I've only made two so far and both were outstanding; pineapple coconut cake and double chocolate muffins. Served the muffins like mini-cakes with fresh berries and whipped cream...YUMMY!! I only had EVOO in the house and used that both times. No one could tell there was olive oil in the cake or muffins and the texture of both was great. I'm one of those people who previously would NEVER replace butter in a baking recipe. Book also tells you which recipes are suitable for using whole wheat flour instead of white. I haven't tried that yet but intend to soon. The book is also put together very well and full of great photos. I'm adding this to my "great gift" list for friends and family!!Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
