Charles John Huffam Dickens (Portsmouth, Inglaterra, 7 de febrero de 1812 – Gads Hill Place, Inglaterra, 9 de junio de 1870) fue un famoso novelista inglés, uno de los más conocidos de la literatura universal, y el principal de la era victoriana. Fue maestro del género narrativo, al que imprimió ciertas dosis de humor e ironía, practicando a la vez una aguda crítica social. En su obra destacan las descripciones de gente y lugares, tanto reales como imaginarios. Utilizó en ocasiones el seudónimo Boz.
Críticas posteriores, tales como las de George Gissing y G. K. Chesterton, defendieron y aclamaron su dominio de la lengua inglesa como inigualable, sus personajes como inolvidables, y en gran medida su profunda sensibilidad social. No obstante, también recibió críticas de sus mejores lectores —George Henry Lewes, Henry James, y Virginia Woolf entre ellos— los cuales achacaron ciertos defectos a sus obras, como el sentimentalismo efusivo, acontecimientos irreales y personajes grotescos.1
Sus novelas y relatos cortos disfrutaron de gran popularidad en vida del escritor, y aún hoy se editan continuamente. Dickens escribió novelas por entregas, el formato usual en la ficción en su época, por la simple razón de que no todo el mundo poseía los recursos económicos necesarios para comprar un libro, y cada nueva entrega de sus historias era esperada con gran entusiasmo por sus lectores, nacionales e internacionales. Dickens fue y sigue siendo venerado como un ídolo literario por escritores de todo el mundo.

    You surely jest, right?

    What? Did the 'editor' hire an overseas outfit so unfamiliar with both English and Spanish that the so called translation is the stuff that e-mail jokes are all about? What kind of bookstore are you running? I gave it one star because the system will not accept less.
