Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
In this paperback picture book based on an episode of the popular Nickelodeon television “Olivia” series, Olivia cannot wait to visit the aquarium with her class. While little brother Ian cannot understand the fuss about looking at big fish tanks, Olivia is particularly excited to see the sea lions. Unfortunately, her field trip does not start out the way she had hoped. Mrs. Hoggenmuller pairs her with Francine rather than Julian, they have to listen to a lecture on aquarium rules, and instead of running off to explore freely, each student has a passport to fill out by visiting each exhibit—and Francine insists on starting with the smallest creatures and working their way up. Will Olivia ever get to see the sea lions? Fans of Ian Falconer’s independent, creative pig will be sorely disappointed by this bland incarnation. The story lacks any sense of suspense, and the neat ending with Olivia winning the prize and actually getting to feed the sea lions feels particularly antithetical to the original character’s frequent battles against such perceived threats as parental warnings and the rules of conformity. Spaziante’s digital illustrations are appropriate to the story in that they look as if they were captured directly from the television program. Young fans of the television series will no doubt be content with what they find here, but most others will want to spend their time with Falconer’s original. Twenty-five stickers are included. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith; Ages 4 to 6.
