Overview

One 11 year-old girl can make a difference-as budding ornithologist and artist Olivia Bouler has proven, single-handedly raising over $175,000 for the Gulf Coast oil spill recovery. Devastated by the disaster and eager to do her part, Olivia wrote a letter to Audubon, “11 years old and willing to help” offering her own bird paintings to raise contributions for Gulf recovery efforts. The idea took flight, and Olivia proceeded to send out over 500 paintings, many of which are captured in this lavish picture book that recaps her valiant campaign to save birds affected by the spill.

Written in her own words, this unique introduction to backyard and endangered birds features Olivia's hand-drawn illustrations, bird facts, and full-color photos celebrating Olivia's campaign. Olivia's Birds
supports Audubon's conservation mission, including Gulf Coast cleanup efforts and is printed on FSC eco-friendly paper.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Eleven-year-old Bouler, who raised more than ,000 for the Audubon Society's Gulf Coast oil spill recovery efforts through the sale of her bird paintings, pairs her artwork with casual, informative passages to create an upbeat lesson on bird identification, habitat, and nature preservation. Birds are organized according to kid-friendly classifications, like "Birds That Live in the Woods" and "Weird & Wacky Birds," including the pyrrhuloxia and Eastern phoebe ("Dogs wag their tails—and so do these birds perched on a branch!"). Bouler's depictions of familiar birds like the Canada goose, bald eagle, and hummingbird are carefully observed and spirited; her vivacious attitude may inspire ecologically minded readers to get involved. Ages 39. (May)

School Library Journal
Gr 35—An 11-year-old from Long Island spends her vacations on the Gulf Coast with her grandparents. After hearing about the April 2010 oil spill, she volunteered to raise money to save the birds endangered by the disaster. A self-proclaimed "decent drawer," she wrote to the Audubon Society and offered to sell her drawings as a fundraiser (she raised more than $150,000). Her love of birds and drawing gives the book touching beauty and lyricism. The child's straightforward voice is engaging, evocative, and insightful, and her bird-watching advice is spot-on—"And don't just look up. I once found a hummingbird nest on the ground of a wooded area." Her lively drawings capture the avian personalities, often with just a few lines. The letter she wrote is reproduced and she encourages children and adults to participate in environmental causes. Budding naturalists, artists, and activists will be inspired and galvanized by Olivia Bouler.—Frances E. Millhouser, formerly at Chantilly Regional Library, Fairfax County, VA

I highly recommend Olivia's book. This book is not only for children but also for adults. The illustrations are beautiful. I love the dedication and support Olivia has for the gulf oil spill and her love for birds. All of this shows in her writing and illustrations. I hope she continues.

OLIVIA'S BIRDS is a poignantly charming valentine to our planet that is written and illustrated by an 11-year-old girl. Olivia Bouler's passion for the environment--especially birds--is infectious and her vibrant illustrations remind us just how special nature is. This book is a treat for adults and children alike and is perfect for sharing. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Oliva's talent and dedication to nature and "her" birds is very evident in her first book. Although the reading age is 9-12, this book is a must for many people. Both of my sons (ages 6 and 10) loved the pictures and text, but more importantly it led to discussions with me about what we see around us everyday and how we can do little and big things to better our world. In addition, I think school libraries, elementary classrooms, grandparents and any interested artist would enjoy Olivia's book. The information is accessible, inspirational and informative - and a purchase supports Audubon and their good works. Overall, a must have!!

Truly inspiring! This is a must have book for all bird lovers and for children as an introduction to the beauty of birds. Olivia Bouler's gorgeous drawings show the the delicate details of these creatures and reminds the reader how important it is to protect them!

Through delicately hand-crafted art, tireless hours of painting, days of interviews, and personal trips to see the majestic creatures she crafts, Olivia has struck gold in her book. In addition to the fact that the book is informative, enlightening, and fascinating, the inspirational story behind the illustrations is an enthralling one. Olivia's book alone is enough to remind us just how important it is to preserve the environment.

Olivia's story is truly inspirational! I shared Olivia's story with my students and she inspired them to take up her cause for the Gulf wildlife. I purchased this book to share with them as well. So many children know her story from the press coverage and TV and this book will give them something to remember always. The original artwork makes the book very special. It shows Olivia's passion for birding and her love for them shines through.

A perfect book to introduce a love of birds and nature to children, and to remind adults of how important it is to save them.

This informative picture book, from a talented young girl, truly is amazing. After Olivia raised over $100,000 for the Gulf effort, she continues to astonish us all through this book. The various, hand-drawn, pictures of birds, ranging from a warbler to a barred owl, are a spectacle. The future ornithologist's motivation and deication towards not only resolving the contamination in the Gulf, but helping the ASPCA and Project Puffin is clearly seen in this book. The unique drawings are all very personal and Olivia's feelings are seen in each of them. "Olivia's Birds: Saving the Gulf" not only displays Olivia's inspiring pictures, but informs the reader about the life of birds, where certain birds are found, certain traits of some birds and more. Everyone should purchase this book to learn about the work of an incredible young girl and the birds that motivated her to change the world!

Purchased this book for my children who love to identify birds. We have already pored over the wonderful illustrations. My kids truly enjoyed both the text and the pictures. I would highly recommend this one to other families who love nature. The author is an 11 year old girl who is devoted to birds and the environment. My kids loved knowing this detail, and one of them is even attempting her own book!

Olivia's Birds is a beautiful book for children to learn about the many birds in the world. I bought this book for my grandson and he now watches eagerly out the window looking for birds. He can now recognize some birds thanks to Olivia. I bought a few of the books to give to my nieces and nephews. I also learned much about birds. When you tell the children that an eleven year old wrote the book they are very ikmpressed. I have also recommended this book to a teacher friend who teaches a unit on birds for seven year old children.

When one ten year old girl heard about the 2010 Gulf oil spill she knew she had to help the affected wildlife. From her first idea to sell her bird drawings as a fundraiser, through her campaign to raise awareness to Save the Gulf, Olivia Bouler has shared her fascination with all types of birds. In "Olivia's Birds Saving the Gulf" all of her joy and dedication is presented in a fun, easy to read format that is beautifully illustrated with paintings of the birds she loves; the common garden variety and endangered species alike. There are notes on how to feed birds, get involved in environmental projects and what Olivia would do if she were President. It's an educational resource and a must read for every budding bird-lover, artist or environmentalist.

I absolutely adore this book. It is incredible to experience the wondrous world of birds through the eyes of Olivia. In fact, I am giving a copy to each one of my nieces and nephews - and I look forward to enjoying Olivia's journey all over again with them. I definitely recommend this lovely and heartwarming book to all readers - both children and adults alike have something to learn from Olivia and her story. Enjoy!

There is so much wonderful and interesting information interspersed with Olivia's wonderful, evocative bird drawings. It is a great way to introduce children to the world of our feathered friends and also show them what a young person can accomplish when they put their heart and soul into a project. This book is beautiful and inspirational at the same time. I have happily given copies to my best friends with young children and donated a copy to my local library as well. Olivia is an amazing young lady and her message is a strong one, that needs to be shared - with all generations.

This was a great find for my nieces! They loved the hand drawn illustrations and were astonished to learn that the author was their age! This book helps to start a dialogue about the need to preserve our vanishing wetlands and oceans. The young author presents honest and thoughtful insights into her experiences with the endangered birds of the gulf coast..A MUST HAVE BOOK!!!!!!! Viv Maudlin
