Six-year-old Oliie gets his first skis on his birthday and travels on them to King Winter's castle. He meets Jack Frost, Mrs. Thaw, King Winter himself, and joins King Winter's elves in outdoor fun before returning home. When winter ends, Mrs. Thaw returns and prepares the way for Spring, who comes in a carriage drawn by white butterflies. The illustrations are so beautiful that this book has been used by many a librarian as a seasonal exhibit.
Elsa Beskow was a favorite Swedish children's book author and illustrator, whose books have been translated into many languages. Her illustrations are timeless: botanically correct with a childlike appeal, always light and happy. In this book the snow scenes have the purity of untouched fresh soft snow.
There is plenty of action to interest young children and the beautiful illustrations would gladden the heart of any parent reader-aloud. Children who are beginning to read would like the large size type.
