Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
"This volume demystifies the Summer and Winter Games for young readers," PW noted, adding that the "energetic, whimsical yet detailed watercolors capture the excitement." Ages 4-8. (May) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
This book provides a brief introduction for young children to the pomp and circumstance of the Olympic Games. The text provides details such as the meaning of the five rings, the medals awarded and the preparation required to set up the Olympic village. There is little focus on the individual events, more on the overall pageant. The illustrations are serviceable watercolors with lots of detail.
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
In words and pictures young children can understand, B. G. Hennessy describes the actions and efforts of all who will participate in the Olympics. We see not only the athletes but those unknown 'behind the scenes' workers who design the buildings, make the uniforms, the equipment, the flags, etc. Both summer and winter events are included with colorful and energetic pictures. The scope and grandeur of these games makes everyone proud of being part of them.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-If you're looking to stock up on books about the Olympics as the Summer Games in Atlanta draw near, here's a suitable purchase. The scant text depicts everyone from the athletes to those who manufacture equipment for both the Summer and Winter games. Hennessy gives an overview of what's involved in putting on and participating in the Olympics, rather than factual accounts of various competitions. Still, readers and listeners will be made aware of the opening ceremonies, the myriad events, the medal presentations, and the Olympic village. No athletes or specific sites are mentioned by name. Cartoonlike illustrations provide a suitable complement to the breezy writing style. A basic introduction.-Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
Kirkus Reviews
A brief look at the modern Olympics. Hennessy (The First Night, 1993, etc.) describes the long preparations for the games (athletes practicing, workers building venues, manufacturers making sporting equipment, farmers growing ceremonial flowers) and the events themselves, most covered in lists that provide a sense of the variety of the efforts without being exhaustive. Before and after such lists is a text written in a crisp, elevated voice: "In ancient Greece . . . the winners were the strongest, the fastest, and the bravest athletes of their time." In an entirely different key are the watercolor cartoons, as detailed as anything by Philippe Dupasquier and conveying a similar glee in visual asides for readers to find in repeat viewings. The gently mocking pictures depict sprawling scenes of a generic Olympic village and determined athletes with comic expressions on their faces. In general, Chesworth also musters the scale of the games: the simultaneity of events, the crushing organization required, and the mass of people involved as participants, spectators, and administrators.
