All Music Guide - Andrew Leahey
Although The O.C.'s ratings dropped with each new season, the show maintained its ability to introduce hip bands to a mainstream audience. Artists like Alexi Murdoch, the Dandy Warhols, and Rooney evoked the sunny charm of the West Coast, and The O.C.'s producers capitalized on their ability to distill the show's appeal into musical form, eventually releasing six popualr soundtracks before the series was canceled. It's no surprise, then, that Gossip Girl takes a similar approach, given the similarities between both shows. Alexandra Patsavas, the same music supervisor who helped choose songs for The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy, is at the helm once again, picking tunes that ...

Alexandra Patsavas, the same music supervisor who helped choose songs for The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy, is at the helm once again, picking tunes that evoke the show's urban setting while ensuring that the artists included -- the Kills, Crystal Castles, the Tings Tings, etc. -- are as fashionable as the characters' wardrobes. Gossip Girl is set in New York City, nearly 3,000 miles from California's Orange County, and the music reflects that distance, emphasizing synthesizers and drum machines instead of The O.C.'s sunny guitars. There's a vague sense of icy-chic '80s nostalgia here -- a retro mood that, given the median age of the show's characters, doesn't seem altogether fitting -- but it still contributes to the soundtrack's hipster appeal, evoking a time in which the city was dirtier and more dangerous. Gossip Girl is purposely gaudy and controversial, and while this album doesn't flaunt "Parental Advisory" stickers or any truly questionable material, it still serves as a fitting companion to the show's first season.

    Fun, high-energy soundtrack

I rarely pay much attention to a television show's soundtrack, often because that soundtrack does little to enhance my sense of the show. But with Gossip Girl, there were several moments while I was watching that I actually thought to myself how much I loved the music. And while a few of my favorite songs didn't make it to this soundtrack, other songs by their artists did. Perhaps for that reason, the album maintains the sound and energy I remember from the show. I especially love that many of the songs bring to mind specific characters in specific moments, even if I can't remember on exactly which episodes they originally aired: "One Week of Danger" feels very Chuck, "Got Your Number" very Blair, and "Three Wishes" could almost be every character in some small way.

    It's amazing!

I'm a big fan of the show "Gossip Girl" and the books. I was thrilled when I found out that they were coming out with a cd with some music that was featured on the show. I recommend this cd to anyone even if you don't watch the show. The songs are amazing and are fun to dance to. I'm pretty sure that everyone who buys this cd will enjoy it.
