Omit the Harsh

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Ronnie D. Lankford

Both the richness and tonal consistency work well to prepare the listener for the music of Bucho. The band fronts a big sound, complete with keyboards and horns, and can loosely be described as Latin with touches of jazz and pop. They may remind listeners of the Iguanas, though Bucho's overall approach is smoother. With eight members -- lead singer/guitarist Gerald Pease; bassist Josh Lippi; percussionist Derek Taylor; organist Ben Schwier; trumpeters Anthony Coleman, Justin Williams, and Leon Moore; and saxophonist Roger Cox -- the possibility for innovative ...

The painting/photo that graces the cover of Omit the Harsh is a rich rust gold with a consistent tonality. With eight members -- lead singer/guitarist Gerald Pease; bassist Josh Lippi; percussionist Derek Taylor; organist Ben Schwier; trumpeters Anthony Coleman, Justin Williams, and Leon Moore; and saxophonist Roger Cox -- the possibility for innovative arrangements is endless. Bucho nonetheless build a recognizable sound, first because of Pease's silky, versatile vocals, and secondly because no matter how the members mix it up, an underlying richness remains. Pease kicks off the first cut, "The Joy I Bring," a cappella, creating quite a surprise when the band joins him with a beautiful wash of horns and funky bass. Steady percussion gives "Pain & Pleasuring" an easygoing vibe, with a nice balance between the horns and the keyboards. The lyrics fit the mood of the music, urging listeners to put away their differences and "omit the harsh." Bucho have a knack for blending '70s pop, a touch of jazz, and Latin rhythms to create a stimulating sound on Omit the Harsh.
