Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
"Omiyage" is the Japanese word for gift. Sudo, author of a number of books on Japanese quilting including Harmonies & Hurricanes: Color & Line in Japanese Quilts and Circles of the East, here turns her attention to small, handmade, fabric gifts requiring only simple hand sewing, colorful fabric scraps, and imagination. Forty-three original designs for gifts such as fabric Temari balls, boxes, pincushions, pockets, pouches, and evening bags are featured. The author also includes a teaching plan for instructors wishing to use the book as a textbook for sewing classes. Notes on techniques and background information on the place of personal gifts in the Japanese calendar throughout the year add to the appeal of this unique volume. Highly recommended for large public libraries and textile collections. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Fun, beautiful, and inspiring

This is an excellent source for unique gifts you can very easily make. This is a great book for experts and beginners, as the projects are pretty simple, some more than others. In many cases, you can use up all those scraps of fabric and batting you have lying around, and you can adjust the size of each piece to suit yourself. My only wish is that the instructions were a little more explicit, and that there were more projects!

    fantastic projects!

I have not been able to put this book down since I got it! I've made quite a few of the projects already, including the Cicada purse, Sakura pouch, and Butterfly pouch. Anyone who likes small sewing projects should buy this book today! The finished pieces look like they might be difficult to make, but the author includes patterns and step-by-step instructions that simplify the process. Most items can be completed in a few hours or less.

    creative and beautiful

This book is a visual delight! I brought it home and my 13 year old daughter went right to work making one of the flower purses. It turned out beautifully. I have shown it to others and they immediately wanted it for their sewing library.

    Beautifully presented craft book

I thought the book is beautifully presented but agree with another reviewer that some steps have been omitted. Wanted to ask those who have read this book if anyone has attempted to make the Pocket Baby if they could email me as I am having difficulty getting past step 1!

    Good for ideas

This book showed the creativity of the author very well, but when trying to recreate the pieces myself I noticed that small steps were left out of the directions. The projects may be easier for an experienced sewer but as a beginner it was very hard at first to understand the process of getting from step to step.
