Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Designed for beginning readers, this nonfiction book introduces youngsters to different aspects of life on a mountain. The author discusses characteristics of mountainous areas, as well as animals common to these high regions (eagles, wildcats, bighorn sheep, gorillas and deer). Each double-page spread contains a full-color photograph on the left-hand side and one or two short sentences on the right-hand side. Throughout the book, many of the same words are repeated. In fact, the word "mountain" appears in blue on every text page. The large type, repetitive language and simple layout encourage young readers to concentrate on developing their reading skills. At the end of this resource, the author includes a glossary of "Words I Can Read," which is organized by word type (noun, plural noun, proper noun, verb and adjective), and a picture and word matching game. This small volume offers a great opportunity for young kids to learn new words and explore a unique natural habitat. Part of the "SandCastle 2 What Do You See?" series. 2001, ABDO Publishing, $18.50. Ages 5 to 7. Reviewer: Debra Briatico AGES: 5 6 7
