Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: John Mark Oscherwitz, M.D.(University of Kansas School of Medicine)
Description: This is an on-call reference for the pathology resident with an emphasis on clinical pathology. The authors provide a brief review of each area of laboratory medicine and use several diagnostic algorithms and tables for quick reference.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide to assist in on-call clinical laboratory problems through a focus of core information. The authors have clearly fulfilled their worthy objectives. From the attractive cover to the detailed index, this book is filled with useful information. Although there are many on-call manuals available, in pathology there are few that can compare to this book.
Audience: The manual is directed primarily towards students and pathology residents, but attending general pathologists will also find this a particularly useful reference when called to give advice outside their area of expertise. The principal author is a well-known author in clinical laboratory medicine. In this abbreviated version he writes a concise and well-directed manual for urgent clinical problems. Anatomic pathology is also briefly covered.
Features: The various branches of clinical pathology are reviewed, including basic hematology, hematopathology, microbiology, virology, transfusion medicine, and cytogenetics. Transfusion medicine and coagulation are covered quite well with many tables to maximize efficiency. There are also excellent tables and diagnostic algorithms in the chapter on hematopoietic malignancies. However, when discussing the immunophenotypes the data are incomplete with regard to the acute myelogenous leukemias. The discussion of anatomic pathology is relatively limited with few charts or references. The charts and tables are of high quality and up-to-date with current references. However, aside from the tables and algorithms, the remaining text does not contain references.
Assessment: This well written, concise, and efficient pocket-sized reference is for on-call clinical laboratory problems. There is certainly a great need for this unique manual, which will make taking call for pathology residents an easier job.
