On Christmas Eveby Ann M. Martin, Alison Fraser (Read by)
Tess McAlister truly believes in magic, and is convinced that this is the year she will finally meet Santa Claus. Tess has many Christmas wishes, but her most fervent wish is not for herself, but for a friend. Her faith in the season results in a Christmas Eve so wondrous, so sparkling, that listeners won’t be able to help but feel transformed.
Like white Christmases and crackling fires in the hearth, On Christmas Eve portrays the magic and the spirit of hope that make the holidays merry.
Tess, 9, is a bit old to still believe in Santa Claus, but believe she does in this novel (Scholastic, 2006) by Ann M. Martin. She also believes that midnight is a powerful time, especially on Christmas Eve. Tess hopes to take advantage of the magical hour to help her best friend's dad who is slowly dying of cancer. In this unevenly paced novel, Tess actually meets Santa who teaches her about miracles and hope in this story set in the late 1950s. While this is not one of Martin's best novels, Broadway actress Alison Fraser does a wonderful job of bringing it to life. Her appropriately girlish tone is suitably somber when necessary, and she successfully conveys the sense of wonder that Tess feels. Fraser is the highlight of the production.

This story brought me back to the times when I thought animals spoke and Santa delivered toys on Christmas Eve. Martin leads us to a child's fantasy world where anything can happen.
This book does a wonderful job of conveying Christmas spirit! It also addresses issues of dealing with a dying parent and friendship. This book is very uplifting and you can feel the Christmas magic as you read it! It can definitely help reassure children about the magic of Christmas! I also look at my dog very differently now too! Can't wait til Christmas Eve....
