Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Dan M. Somogyi, MD (University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine)
Description: This book focuses on the management of common athletic injuries encountered in the practice of sports medicine.
Purpose: The purpose, which is fulfilled, is to provide a clinical base to all those who are involved in the care of the athlete. Within a large arena of sports there may be health professionals with little or no field experience, and this text will allow them a quick overview to increase their level of confidence.
Audience: It is targeted for primary care sports medicine fellows as well as residents-in-training. It will also be helpful to other primary healthcare providers such as athletic trainers, emergency medical technicians, clinical nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. This book can also be useful for practicing physicians in primary care specialties. The editors and contributors are clinicians with specialty training in sports medicine who are involved in the care of athletes on a daily basis.
Features: Although this book is compact, it includes many clear black-and-white illustrations and figures that enhance the written material. Its size allows it to be easily carried in a medical bag or coat pocket.
Assessment: This book is small enough to be a handbook yet comprehensive enough to be a valuable resource for those providing care for athletes on the playing field. It is highly recommended for those with little or no experience in sports medicine coverage who may find themselves on the sidelines responsible for athlete care.
