Overview

Actress Jennifer Lopez's debut recording isn't the usual Hollywood vanity project. Before her current role as bombshell du jour, she trained as a singer and dancer (and landed a gig as a Fly Girl on "In Living Color"). And although Lopez has starred in "Out of Sight," "Money Train," and "Selena," she isn't coming from Tinseltown on this recording. The title of the album, ON THE 6, refers to the subway line Lopez took to and from auditions while growing up in the Bronx, and the songs play like her account of her favorites and influences. That means the '80s and the Latin- and hip-hop-tinged dance-pop of groups like Exposé, the Cover Girls, and, most importantly, Lisa Lisa. Lopez calls her music "Latin soul," and there are elements of both styles on this engaging recording. Rodney Jerkins produced the single "If You Had My Love," which bears his trademark combination of high gloss and easygoing bounce, while Latin superstar Marc Anthony joins Lopez on "No Me Ames." On the hip-hop tip, "Feelin' So Good" features rhymes by Big Punisher and Fat Joe, and the track was produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs. Other big-time producers like the Trackmasters and Emilio Estefan contribute to the recording, but they never upstage the star, who shows throughout that she's a singer, not an actress trying to sing.

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Jennifer Lopez's debut album, On the 6, showcases the actress' sultry, versatile voice in a number of settings, including pop ballads, Latin pop, and R&B. Star producers like Sean "Puffy" Combs, Trackmasters, and Emilio Estefan, Jr. lend their talents to the album, making On the 6 a perfectly polished and varied album, which features a musical blend Lopez calls "Latin soul." Smooth ballads such as "Should've Never," "Too Late," "Could This Be Love," and "No Me Ames," a duet with Latin superstar Marc Anthony, dominate the album's first half; while these songs show off the gentler side of Lopez's vocal gifts, they tend to sound too similar. It's on the R&B and Latin-tinged tracks where Lopez really shines. Along with the insistent first single "If You Had My Love," cuts like "Feelin' So Good" and "Let's Get Loud" have a fiery, soulful sound more in keeping with Lopez's public persona. On the 6's second half capitalizes on this spicy, upbeat side, particularly on "Waiting for Tonight" and "Open off My Love," which draws inspiration from rap, R&B, and Latin styles with its sparse arrangement of horns, keyboards, and beats. The tropical remix of "No Me Ames" and "Una Noche Mas," the Spanish version of "Waiting for Tonight," emphasize Lopez's distinctive heritage, which elevates On the 6 from a star's vanity project to an individual but accessible work of pop songcraft by a widely talented performer.

This album is great i´m a big fan of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey and When this album was realized in 1999 i went to be a Jennifer Lopez fan as well. Jennifer has a beautiful soft voice not powerful but she sounds awesome she is the new DIVA and she truly can sing songs as PoP and RN´B songs i recommend this album to all Celine and Mariah fans because Jennifer is making similar songs as them from pop,Rn´b to ballads all very well done. And she works with the same producers as Celine and Mariah and they are as Ric Wake(Celine Dion,Mariah Carey),Cory Rooney(Mariah Carey,Marc Anthony)Peter Zizzo(Celine Dion)Dan Shea(Mariah carey,Celine Dion) and Rodney Darkchild Jerkins(Brandy,Monica,Michael Jackson)and Sean Puffy Combs(Mariah Carey)and legendary producer Walter Afanasieff(Celine Dion,Mariah Carey) wrote a song for Jennifer Talk About Us a Celine,Mariah kind of ballad very beautiful. I Love this album it´s so hot you won´t be disapointed.Jennifer is not just a singer,Diva she is also an great actress i love all her movies and she is better than Mariah carey and Whitney Houston she has a big acting talents.I Recommend all her movies they are awesome.

I Love This album it is the best album Jennifer has ever done and it is her debut. The album was realeased in summer/Fall of 1999 and includes the no#1 hit singles If You Had My Love and Waiting For Tonight the top #5 Let´s Get Loud and more. Jennifer isn´t Mariah Carey but she is a diva of pop-latin and she sings beautifully. All The songs sounds good and my favorits are If You Had My Love,Waiting For Tonight,No Me Ames with Latinsinger Marc Anthony he has a great voice,Let´s Get Loud and The ballads Promise Me You´ll Try and Talk About Us written by Walter Afanasieff(Mariah Carey,Celine Dion)and Produced by Dan Shea&Cory Rooney. This album ROCKS and I recommend it to all fans of Mariah Carey,Celine Dion and Gloria Estefan.

I was expecting the Hip Hop J Lo but was very disappointed that both albums that I purchased of hers were Latin. This must be Marc Anthony influence on her but I liked her better before...
