On the Apostolic Preaching

Overview

St Irenaeus is the most important theologian of the second century, laying the foundation for all future Christian thinkers. Irenaeus tells us that he had known Polycarp, who had himself known the apostles and been appointed by them as the bishop of the church of Smyrna. This direct contact with the immediate successors of the apostles was of importance for Irenaeus in his later defense of Christian practice and teaching. In this work Against the Heresies, he was the first to utilize the full range of apostolic ...

In this work Against the Heresies, he was the first to utilize the full range of apostolic writings in his controversy with the Gnostics and others. Uniting, for the first time, the whole history of God's activity in one all-encompassing divine economy, Irenaeus demonstrates that there is but one God, who has made Himself known through His one Son, Jesus Christ, by the one Holy Spirit, to the one human race, bringing His creatures made from mud into the intimacy of communion with Himself.

The Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, newly translated here from the ancient Armenian version, presents the same vision with exceptional clarity and simplicity. Written at the end of the second century, it outlines Christian teaching in a non-polemical, non-apologetic manner. The second century was an age not unlike our own: drawing upon various elements from a plethora of religions, the Gnostics conjured up their own diverse gods. In response to this, Irenaeus exhorts his readers to hold fast to Scripture, and simply to see what is. The Demonstration is a handbook and a guide to this scriptural reality. Here Irenaeus recounts all the various deeds of God culminating in the exaltation of His crucified Son, Jesus Christ, and the bestowal of His Holy Spirit and the gift of a new heart of flesh. Through the recounting of this history, Irenaeus brings his readers -- then and now -- into the covenant established by God.
