In their view, Lenin talked about national self-determination, but in actuality his aim was to preserve the territorial integrity of the former Russian Empire and the preeminent status of Russia. On the Current Situation in the Ukraine brought its authors expulsion from the Party; and the book is still suppressed in the Soviet Union. It remains a remarkably relevant discussion of Soviet motives and the national aspirations of states living in the shadow of a great world power.

About the Author

Serhii Mazlakh was a prominent journalist and Bolshevik leader. He played a significant role in organizing the Ukrainian Social Democratic Workers' Party in Poltava gubernia for the Ukrainian Constituent Assembly elections and participated in the Tahanrih Bolshevik Conference in April 1918. He went on to serve as director of the Central Statistical Administration of Ukraine. Vasyl' Shakhrai was a Ukrainian Bolshevik revolutionary and a political activist during the Russian Revolution. Recognized as a founder of National Communism, Shakhrai championed the cause of Ukrainian independence.
