Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“More than just a good read, this board book is the ideal traveling companion for what to expect when heading out the door with little ones.”—Pamela Brill, TalkingWalnut.com

This colorful board book takes youngsters through the steps of going on errands. Busy fabric collage and strong black lines make vivid images of a mother and two small children. On the first page Mom asks: “What comes before GO?” The children answer: “We know…Get ready! Get set!” They then “Get ready, get set…Go potty first.” They get their coats and a snack, and buckle car seats. Their first stop is a grocery store. From the cart the little boy reaches for “sugar snacks” and “cookie wookies.” Uh-oh, the answer is no.” His older sister calms him with deep breaths. “If you’re sad or mad, take deep breaths. Ready, set? B-r-e-a-t-h-e in and out and in again. That’s how you calm down.” She helpfully hands Mom a bag of oranges. The siblings walk to a library and then go home to play. The final spread provides “‘On-the-Go’ Tips for Parents & Caregivers” such as “keep to a schedule” and “plan for some fun.” This book would be a useful conversation starter for young families needing to help their children with similar tasks.—School Library Journal

Kirkus Reviews
Self-help for toddlers when running errands gets tough. An exuberant mother motivates her young children to prepare for a day out on the run. Mom believes preparation is key: Her little ones must use the potty, get a snack and buckle their car seats before their trip to the grocery store. When sugary snacks prove too tempting, the parent's clear instructions simmer down the youngsters' fuss before it becomes a full-blown temper tantrum. "If you're sad or mad / take deep breathes. / Ready, set? / B-r-e-a-t-h-e / in and out / and in again./ That's how you / calm down." With the youngsters' emotions under control, a quick trip to the library is in order. There's wisdom in the suggestions provided both in the text and lengthy parent's note (as when Mom involves them as SUPER HELPERS in the process). Unfortunately, the preachy dialogue makes Mom's agenda clear. "Listen, follow along, / and even lend a hand!" The colors are bright and the design faintly retro, characters' expressions are fixed in wooden smiles, and there's little visually to extend the storyline. Too much didacticism to go down smooth. My Review: On-the-Go Time is a board book for toddlers about good behavior. Toddlers are always on the go so this book teaches about Get ready, get set and Go. According to the author, ¿Get ready, get set, go get into coats...out the door ...into the car. With On-the-Go Time, shopping and running errands with children really can mean fewer hassles and more fun for everyone!¿ This book contains help tips for parents and caregivers to help keep toddlers moving like scheduling appointments in between children¿s meals and naps to ensure they are rested and ready to go, making a go-time list that would help the child to look forward to. And before you leave home, give your child a chance to use the bathroom or drink a cup of water and snack to take along and many more. This is an easy to read book with great illustrations. If you¿re searching for a book to teach your toddler about good behavior this is it.
