Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Let your imagination soar on a journey to the moon in this engaging picture book that starts and ends with thought-provoking questions. Looking out her window one night, a girl considers the moon. The story asks “What do you think it would be like to go there?” and the following pages reveal basic information about past moon travel, such as that going to the moon takes a huge rocket, the astronauts sit in a cabin at the top, the trip to the moon takes four days, and that a space suit would be necessary since there is “no air on the moon.” There, astronauts explore the moon by space buggy, collect rock samples, take pictures, and put a flag there. Readers will be intrigued to learn that “[y]ou can see our world from the moon. It looks tiny because it is so far away,” before coming to the final question: “Do you think you’ll ever go to the moon?” Davies’ illustrations feature reassuring cartoonlike characters and objects colored in a soft palette, against a background of realistic landscapes. It is easy for young readers to imagine themselves along for the ride. Recommended for children who enjoy imaginative adventures or who like to think about space. This story would be a good addition to preschool or early elementary collections. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green; Ages 3 to 8.

My two year old son is scientifically inquisitive. We've struggled to find books that are gently informative on a toddler's comprehension level. This book definitely fits the bill. The simple narrative introduces young children to basic concepts about space exploration and the nature of the moon. I would highly recommend this book, and I look forward to buying more of similar tone in the future.
