Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Fournier
This book is one in a series called "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science." It would be an appropriate choice to read to young children. It primarily talks about how we use our bodies to move around each day. As the action progresses, the reader can encourage the child to follow along and act out the motions in the book. Some of the actions include jumping, rolling and hopping, as well as making the movements of some favorite animals friends. The illustrations are bright and colorful and promise to keep the child's attention. The children pictured in the illustrations are from diverse backgrounds and differ in their physical abilities. They have one thing in common, however; in one way or another, they all like to move!
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1In the first part of this basic introduction to movement, a small boy tells of the enjoyment he gets from kicking a ball, walking on tiptoes, throwing a ball, etc. How ability to move changes as humans grow up and age is mentioned. However, the mechanics of how a person moves is not covered. In the second half of the book, the child imitates various animals, hopping like a kangaroo, slithering like a snake, etc. The science aspect, which up to this point has been largely observation, changes its focus and the presentation becomes more reflective of the child's enthusiasm for movement. The illustrations are simple, large, bright, cheerful, and reflect cultural diversity. Marie Hall Ets's Just Me Viking, 1965 is a better exploration of animal movement and Linda Lowery's Twist with a Burger, Jitter with a Bug Ticknor & Fields, 1994 conveys the joys of movement with much more pizzazz.Louise L. Hazel Rochman
r for reading aloud. Part of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, this picture book celebrates movement. Cheerful cartoon-style pictures in pencil and watercolor show a boy, his friends, and his family on the move. "I walk. I run. I ride my bike. I dance. I prance. I march. I skip and hop and twirl around." He uses his legs and feet to kick a ball. He uses his arms and hands to throw and catch. When he was a tiny baby, he learned to roll over, sit up, crawl, walk. His friend in a wheelchair can't walk but shows him how to do pull-ups. Kids will act out the movements and learn the verbs and add their own energetic improvisations.
